  Literature Fellowships: Translation Projects

From the Chairman

The National Endowment for the Arts is a public agency dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, bringing the arts to all Americans, and providing leadership in arts education. Because a great nation deserves great art, the NEA is committed to supporting creativity throughout the country, in communities large and small, urban and rural.

In order to encourage emerging translators in addition to more established ones, the Arts Endowment has revised its Literature Translation Fellowships guidelines to require 20 pages of published translation rather than 48 pages as formerly required.

By creating the international exchange of poetry, fiction, drama, and belles-lettres, translation broadens our human experience and makes the foreign familiar. As novelist Anthony Burgess wrote, "Translation is not a matter of words only: it is a matter of making intelligent a whole culture."

The Arts Endowment supports translation to promote dialogue between cultures and to provide opportunities for Americans to delve into their heritage by exploring the identities of our neighbors from around the world.

Through outstanding programs such as the Literature Translation Fellowships, the Arts Endowment continues its legacy of supporting excellence in the arts for all Americans.
