CONNECTICUT Artspace, Inc. New Haven, CT $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support creation of new work by artists as part of a 10th anniversary celebration of the city's open studio program. A dozen artists (former participants in the open studio program) will be commissioned to make work to be installed in public lobbies of major buildings around the town's central park. Artspace, Inc. (Consortium) New Haven, CT $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support 50,000 Beds, a video art exhibition. As many as 40 artists will be commissioned to create video-based work inspired by tourism and the hospitality industry in partnership with the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. Aston Magna Foundation for Music and the Humanities, Inc. Danbury, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Aston Magna Festival. The annual festival will feature period-instrument performances and educational activities over several summer weekends at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, and in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Connecticut Players Foundation, Inc. (aka Long Wharf Theatre) New Haven, CT $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of Man of La Mancha with accompanying educational activities. Artistic director of Court Theater, Charles Newell, will adapt and direct the classical musical theater work, with book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion. Curbstone Press, Inc. Willimantic, CT $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the translation, publication, and promotion of multicultural poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Curbstone Press will sponsor readings at cultural and educational institutions around the country. Hartford Stage Company, Inc. Hartford, CT $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development and production of a new play with education and outreach activities. Artistic director Michael Wilson will direct the East Coast premiere production of Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner by Luis Alfaro. Pilobolus, Inc. Washington Depot, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a new work by artistic director Jonathan Wolken. The work will premiere at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. The Right Offspring will be performed to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, and will be the focal point of Pilobus's 36th anniversary season.
Real Art Ways, Inc. Hartford, CT $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support an exhibition series featuring the work of emerging artists in New York state and New England. A jury of artists and curators will select artists for solo exhibitions. Spring Lake Productions, Inc. New Milford, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the revival of Garden of Earthly Delights, choreographed by artistic director Martha Clarke. The work will be presented on tour across the United States and abroad. Wesleyan University Middletown, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support performances and residency activities by dance companies. The Breaking Ground Dance Series will include Bebe Miller, Brian Brooks Moving Company, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, and a DanceMasters Weekend-a series of master classes and a showcase performance. Wesleyan University (on behalf of Wesleyan University Press) Middletown, CT $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication, promotion, and distribution of new collections of poetry. The press will promote the titles on its Web site with a special effort at targeting classrooms. Yale University (on behalf of Yale Repertory Theatre) New Haven, CT $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the New Play Program, a permanent, fully integrated initiative aimed at supporting the creation of new work for the American stage. The program will extend commissions and development support to emerging, mid-career, and leading artists in the field.
