MICHIGAN Carpenter, Bogdana Ann Arbor, MI $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships: Translation Projects FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the translation from Polish of a selection of poems by Julia Hartwig. A generous selection of some 140-160 pages will be translated, emphasizing Hartwig's latest volume, Bez Pozegnania (No Farewell), but also including selections from her earlier volumes. Julia Hartwig was born in Lublin, Poland, in 1921. During World War II, she studied Polish literature, philology, and philosophy at the underground University of Warsaw. From 1990 to 1993, she served as vice-chairman of the Society of Polish Writers. She has also received the Austrian Georg Trakl Prize, the Prize of the Turzanski Foundation, and has been a finalist for the Nike Prize.
Bogdana Carpenter is a Professor of Polish and Chair of the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan. She has translated Zbigniew Herbert, Czeslaw Milosz, and Wislawa Szymborska into English, and has received many awards for her work including the Witter Bynner Poetry Translation Prize.
Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings Southfield, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the creation and presentation of new works for chamber ensemble. Three composers each will write a new work that will be performed by the Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings ensemble and student ensembles from the University of Michigan and Oberlin College. Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival Operating Corporation Southfield, MI $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Shouse Institute, a professional training program. Emerging, pre-professional ensembles will participate in coaching sessions, master classes, and performances. Michigan Association of Community Arts Agencies (aka MACAA) Lansing, MI $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support a series of workshops for Michigan arts and cultural organizations. The regional and statewide workshops will focus on arts management, leadership initiatives, and economic and community development. Michigan Opera Theatre Detroit, MI $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support the world premiere of Cyrano by composer David DiChiera and librettist Bernard Uzan. The project is a collaboration between Michigan Opera Theatre, Florida Grand Opera, and the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Michigan State University (Consortium) East Lansing, MI $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the 2007 Great Lakes Folk Festival. A collaboration with the City of East Lansing, the festival will showcase traditional cultural treasures of the nation's Upper Midwest and provide a sampling of the best of traditional artists from around the country and the world. Millan Theatre Company (aka Detroit Repertory Theatre) Detroit, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of Between Men and Cattle, a new play by Richard Kalinoski. Inspired by a 1992 60 Minutes interview between Mike Wallace and a young African American boy, the play confronts the issue of deeply embedded racial bias in the American experience. Pine Mountain Music Festival, Inc. Hancock, MI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support performances of Mozart's Cosi fan tutti and a tour by the Resident Opera Artist Program. The touring program will serve opera audiences in the remote region of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Sphinx Organization, Inc. Detroit, MI $55,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the artistic development of the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble of professional African American and Latino musicians from orchestras and institutions around the country will perform concerts in Ann Arbor and at Orchestra Hall in Detroit, and feature talented, young soloists in each of the concerts. University Musical Society Ann Arbor, MI $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Festival of Mexico and the Americas. Performances and community engagement programs will focus on the Mexican, Central American, and South American communities. Walker, Nicole Grand Rapids, MI $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship.
