MISSOURI Beer, Nicole Columbia, MO $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Better Family Life, Inc. St. Louis, MO $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support a national dance festival, Black Dance-USA: A Celebration of Movement. The project will consist of dance workshops, a concert by a regional or national dance company, discussion sessions, dance films, lecture-demonstrations, and African percussion and song classes. Big River Association (aka River Styx) St. Louis, MO $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and distribution of issues of River Styx, St. Louis's oldest literary magazine. River Styx will sponsor an international poetry contest for more than 500 poets worldwide. Cinema St. Louis St. Louis, MO $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the presentation of American independent, documentary, and foreign films at the 16th St. Louis International Film Festival. An audience of 20,000 will participate in screenings of 200 short and feature-length films. Coterie, Inc. (aka Coterie Theatre) Kansas City, MO $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the premiere of a musical adapted from two literary works. Artistic director Jeff Church will direct Twice Upon a Time: The Lorax and The Emperor adapted by lyricist Lynn Ahrens and composer Stephen Flaherty from the writings of Dr. Seuss and Hans Christian Anderson. Coterie, Inc. (aka Coterie Theatre) (Consortium) Kansas City, MO $28,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production and tour of a play. In collaboration with Accessible Arts, Inc., the company will produce and tour Frank Higgins' adaptation of The Country of the Blind, based on the novella by H.G. Wells. Curators of the University of Missouri at Columbia (on behalf of BkMk Press) Columbia, MO $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication and promotion of fiction and poetry. The press will promote the books through author interviews to appear on the radio program, New Letters on the Air, and in print in the literary journal New Letters. Curators of the University of Missouri at Columbia (on behalf of Missouri Review) Columbia, MO $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the publication, promotion, and related expenses for issues of the Missouri Review. The magazine will provide publishing mentorships for undergraduate and graduate students. Friends of Chamber Music (aka FCM or The Friends) Kansas City, MO $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support educational programs and chamber music, solo piano, and early music presentations featuring artists and groups including the Moscow Soloists, Richard Goode, and Chanticleer. Eight concerts and three educational programs will be presented. Kansas City Ballet Association, Inc. Kansas City, MO $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of The Moor's Pavane (1949) by choreographer José Limón. The work will be performed at the Lyric Theater in Kansas City, and include free community outreach programs such as workshops and lectures. Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Inc. Kansas City, MO $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a new production of Jake Heggie's opera The End of the Affair. Based on the Graham Greene novel, the opera will be adapted for smaller-scale performances by regional opera houses. Metro Theater Company (Consortium) St. Louis, MO $28,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the United States premiere of Hana's Suitcase, a new play by Canadian playwright Emil Sher. Based on a nonfiction book of the same name by award-winning CBC radio producer Karen Levine, the play will be produced in partnership with Edison Theatre at Washington University. Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies (aka MACAA) Hannibal, MO $16,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the Rural Initiative. The project will provide Web sites and Web services for rural arts agencies, buildings on previous efforts by the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies (MACAA). Opera Theatre of Saint Louis St. Louis, MO $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support the development of a new production of The Ghosts of Versailles by composer John Corigliano and librettist William Hoffman. The company will work closely with the composer and publisher G. Schirmer to develop an alternative version of the opera that mid-size and smaller companies can successfully produce. Paul Mesner Puppets, Inc. Kansas City, MO $18,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of a puppet opera adapted from Humperdinck's Hansel & Gretel. The production will incorporate life-size puppets as actors with opera singers and a live orchestra. Prufer, Kevin Warrensburg, MO $20,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a creative writing fellowship. Unicorn Theatre Kansas City, MO $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the development, residency workshop, staged readings, and full production of a contemporary musical. Playwright Greg Coffin will collaborate with producing artistic director Cynthia Levin and resident music director Anthony Edwards to develop the book, music, and lyrics for 360 Degrees (working title), a work about the course of human relationships in a culture of isolation. Unity Theatre Ensemble Florissant, MO $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater Artistic director/dramaturge Ralph E. Greene and composer/arranger John Selders will create a musical adapted from books in the Sweet Pickles series by Jacquelyn Reinach and Richart Hefter. The series taught lessons about character-building through examples of constructive and destructive personality traits. Wylliams/Henry Danse Theatre Kansas City, MO $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of Orfeo by choreographer Jos Limn. The performance will be held at the White Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center at the University of Missouri Kansas City.
