Commissioned artists will create and perform new works and other artists will participate in residencies that will advance the development of new works scheduled for production in the following season. The festival will be the culmination of a season-long focus on music from, about, and influenced by cultures outside the western European tradition and will include performances of existing and commissioned works in concert halls, community centers, and area schools. More than 500 artists will be included in the publication, and a related Web site will host continuously updated information. Apex Art Curatorial Program (aka apexart) New York, NY $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support an international artist residency program to promote cultural exchange. Artists who reside outside of the United States and have never visited New York City are recommended for the program by curators, critics, and arts professionals from their home countries. In celebration of the 20th anniversary season, the all-day, multi-stage new music "Marathon" will be offered for the first time as a free event in lower Manhattan. The project will include a teaching residency, through which artists teach in the Modern Guest Artist Program; and a performing residency, through which artists are commissioned to present their work in a concert. The Creative Residency Program and the Creative Residency Development Laboratory offers artists the use of Dance Theater Workshop's facilities, as well as presentations at the theater. (aka koosil-ja/dance KUMIKOKIMOTO) New York, NY $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a new work by choreographer Koosil-ja Hwang. The work will be created in collaboration with video artist Caspar Stracke and composer Geoff Matters. The program presents the work of New York choreographers and will take place at St. Mark's Church. The goals of City/Dans are to nurture artists at various stages of their development, and to provide audiences with a deeper understanding of New York choreographers.

(aka Mark Morris Dance Group) Brooklyn, NY $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of new works by choreographer Mark Morris and the revival of other works. The works will be performed in New York and on tour across the United States. Dova, Inc. (aka Doug Varone and Dancers) New York, NY $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the creation and presentation of a new work by choreographer Doug Varone to the music of composer Ricky Ian Gordon, as well as the presentation of past repertory works. The works will be presented at the Rose Theater at Lincoln Center and will be performed to live music. Early Music Foundation, Inc. (aka EARLY MUSIC NEW YORK) New York, NY $12,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a research, performance, and recording project titled Venice and the Islamic World. In conjunction with the Metropolitan Museum's exhibit, performances will take place in New York City and at the Catskill Mountain Foundation in Hunter, New York. Electronic Arts Intermix, Inc. (aka EAI) New York, NY $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the Artists' Videotape Distribution Service. Through an online catalogue, works will be made available to libraries, educational institutions, community centers, museums, and other organizations. Nam June Paik, Mary Lucier, and Gary Hill are among the 185 artists whose work will be distributed.
Emmerich, Karen Stony Brook, NY $10,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships: Translation Projects FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the translation from Greek of the 10 volumes of poetry by Eleni Vakalo that have been collected under the title To allo tou pragmatos: Poiisi 1954-1994 (The Other Side of Things: Poetry 1954-1994). Eleni Vakalo was born in Istanbul in 1921. After the forced exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, her family settled in Athens, where Vakalo lived until her death in 2001. She studied Archaeology at the University of Athens and Art History at the Sorbonne. In addition to her work as a poet, Vakalo was also one of Greece's most prominent 20th-century art critics and theorists. Vakalo received the First State Poetry Prize in 1991 and the prestigious Academy Prize in 1997.
Karen Emmerich teaches Greek and writing at Columbia University. She has been awarded grants and fellowships from the PEN Translation Fund, the American Research Institute in Turkey, the Mellon Foundation, the Onassis Foundation, and the Fulbright Foundation. She has also received the Elizabeth Constantinides Translation Prize for her work.

Six weeks before he died, his fellow Latin American novelists hailed him as the most important figure of his generation at an international conference he attended in Seville.
