VIRGINIA Barter Foundation, Incorporated State Theatre of Virginia (aka Barter Theatre) Abingdon, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the creation and tour of a musical theater work celebrating Appalachian music and culture. The Father of Country Music: The Jimmie Rodgers Story by playwright Dr. Douglas Pote will be directed by producing artistic director Richard Rose and tour with accompanying educational and outreach activities. Hesperus Arlington, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the development and production of The General Project. The silent film The General, starring Buster Keaton, will be presented with live, period-music accompaniment from the Civil War era performed on authentic instruments. Jefferson Center Foundation, Ltd. (Consortium) Roanoke, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the presentation of The Blind Leading..., a work that explores blindness and creativity. In collaboration with the Virginia Association of the Blind, project components will include performances, films screenings, and a colloquium with workshops on audio description. Richmond Ballet Richmond, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of a world premiere by choreographer Jessica Lang. The performance will take place in Richmond Ballet's Studio Series. Shugaar, Antony Charlottesville, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Literature Fellowships: Translation Projects FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the translation from Italian of Sandokan, a short novel by Nanni Balestrini. The book describes the violent and arbitrary injustice of a small town in southern mainland Italy under organized-crime control. Nanni Balestrini was born in Milan in 1935. A respected Italian novelist and poet, he began his career as a member of the "Novissimi" poets and as a member of the "Gruppo '63." Among his most important works are a series of poems entitled La Signorina Richmond, and a number of novels and books of nonfiction focusing upon the often violent and always contentious struggles of the political, union, and student protest movements.
Antony Shugaar studied Italian Literature and Journalism, and has written extensively about the European media and popular culture, with subjects ranging from Silvio Berlusconi to the history of Italian terrorism. He translated Memoirs of an Italian Terrorist and co-authored Latitude Zero: Tales of the Equator.
Signature Theatre, Inc. Arlington, VA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the world premiere production of a contemporary musical with outreach and educational activities. Saving Aimee, by composers David Pomeranz and David Friedman and librettist/lyricist Kathie Lee Gifford with orchestrations by Jonathan Tunick, depicts the life of the controversial preacher Aimee Semple McPherson. Virginia Arts Festival, Inc. Norfolk, VA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Jamestown 2007: A Cultural Celebration of our Nation's Birth. Activities will include commissions, performances, and the expansion of a training institute for emerging composers. Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy Charlottesville, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Virginia Heritage Showcase. This is the first state-wide event to feature traditional masters in the genres of music, material culture, and foodways. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Richmond, VA $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the touring exhibition Darkroom, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The exhibition will feature the work of as many as 16 contemporary South African photographers and video artists. Virginia Opera Association, Inc. Norfolk, VA $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a production of Handel's Agrippina (1710). Performances will take place in Norfolk, Fairfax, and Richmond, Virginia. Virginia Symphony (aka Virginia Symphony Orchestra) Norfolk, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a community engagement residency program. The orchestra will perform concerts in conjunction with Jamestown 2007, a national celebration of the 400th birthday of the Jamestown settlement. Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts (Consortium) Vienna, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of dance companies at Wolf Trap and George Mason University. Companies to be presented include Doug Varone and Dancers, Paul Taylor Dance Company, Limón Dance Company, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Each company will present one performance and one master class open to the public. Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts Vienna, VA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Opera To support a professional training program for singers. Participants will receive individualized training from music and language coaches, directors, and conductors. Youth Orchestra of the Americas (aka YOA) Arlington, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support tour concerts. Four concerts will take place at festivals in Colorado, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Virginia. Founded in 2000, the multicultural orchestra comprises 110 musicians (ages 18 to 26) from 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere.
