WISCONSIN 1000 Friends of Wisconsin Land Use Institute, Inc. (aka 1000 Friends of Wisconsin) Madison, WI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a collaborative planning and design process with Madison area citizens. Community members, elected and appointed officials, local government staff, developers and design professionals will create a neighborhood plan to improve the quality of their built environment. Arts Wisconsin, Inc. Madison, WI $14,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the Rural Arts Initiative. The project will provide leadership training and targeted technical assistance for rural arts resources in 50 of Wisconsin's 72 counties. Ko-Thi, Inc. (aka Ko-Thi Dance Company) Milwaukee, WI $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support Ko-Thi Dance Company's Black History Month concert, annual spring Kuumba Concert, and annual fall Harvest Concert. The concerts will take place at the Alverno College Pitman Theater. The company performs and teaches dance and music rooted in African, African American, and Caribbean cultures. Marquette University (on behalf of Haggerty Museum) Milwaukee, WI $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support a touring exhibition of the work of artist Wilfredo Lam (1902-82), with accompanying catalogue and education programs. As an artist of Spanish, African, and Asian descent, Lam painted works that were a fusion of Afro-Cuban images and European modernism. Milwaukee Ballet Company, Inc. Milwaukee, WI $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the presentation of Genesis II, an International Choreography Competition. Artistic director Michael Pink will choose four choreographers who demonstrate ability in pointe work as well as more contemporary work. The choreographers will have three weeks to create a dance with six or seven dancers from the Milwaukee Ballet. The winner of the competition will create a new work for Milwaukee Ballet's 2007-2008 season.
