ARIZONA Arizona Commission on the Arts Phoenix, AZ $703,400 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Arizona State University (on behalf of Virginia C. Piper Center for Creative Writing) Tempe, AZ $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the Virginia C. Piper Center's Distinguished Visiting Writers Series for 2007-08. Proposed authors include C.D. Wright, Forrest Gander, Pamela Painter, MacKenzie Bezos, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Ralph Angel, and Louise Gluck. Arizona Theatre Company Tucson, AZ $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a full-scale production of the 1924 jazz-age musical Lady, Be Good! with score by George and Ira Gershwin and book by Guy Bolton and Fred Thompson. Artistic director David Ira Goldstein will direct performances in Tucson and Phoenix as part of the theater's 40th-anniversary season. Arizona Theatre Company (Consortium) Tucson, AZ $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a theater access program for underserved youth in rural southern Arizona. In partnership with Young Audiences of Santa Cruz County, the theater will offer school-based workshops, mainstage student matinee performances, summer enrichment opportunities, and ticket vouchers. Association of American Cultures (aka TAAC) Yuma, AZ $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Open Dialogue Eleven. In partnership with the Western States Arts Federation, the 2007 conference, Cultural Democracy-Global Connections, will be held in Denver and will bring together approximately 250 leaders from diverse arts organizations. Grand Canyon Chamber Music Festival, Inc. Grand Canyon, AZ $25,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Native American Composer Apprentice Project. Students will compare and contrast Native American music with European classical music and compose new string quartets that will be performed by the Ethel String Quartet while on tour to reservation schools. Phoenix Art Museum Phoenix, AZ $215,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts Touring To support the touring exhibition Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschien, with accompanying catalogue. This first retrospective of Blumenschien's (1874-1960) work will contribute to the American public's knowledge and understanding of the artist's interpretation of the American West. Phoenix Symphony Association (aka The Phoenix Symphony) Phoenix, AZ $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support One Nation, an educational program targeted to the local Native American community. The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Schools in Scottsdale will collaborate with the orchestra to expand outreach efforts and increase the number of private music lessons offered. Scottsdale Cultural Council (aka Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts) (on behalf of Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art) Scottsdale, AZ $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support Art Start, an educational community arts program of the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The project features an interactive art curriculum including tours and gallery activities to serve children from underserved schools. Tucson Symphony Society (aka Tucson Symphony Orchestra) (Consortium) Tucson, AZ $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Southern Arizona Residency. A collaboration with the Bisbee Community Chorus, the project will consist of an educational component and a public concert in rural communities in southern Arizona. University of Arizona Tucson, AZ $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the 45th Visiting Poets and Writers Reading and Lecture Series. The University of Arizona Poetry Center will support the series with lesson plans to K-12 teachers, community reading groups prior to each event, and an audio anthology of poems read by visiting poets.
