CONNECTICUT Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism Hartford, CT $644,700 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Connecticut Public Broadcasting, Inc. Hartford, CT $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the development and production of a television series about American art collectors. Planned as six one-hour programs, The Collectors will tell the story of the great art collectors of the past whose philanthropy helped establish the major museums of the United States, and it will examine the ideas and conventions of contemporary collectors. Connecticut Theatre Foundation (aka Westport Country Playhouse) Westport, CT $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the production of a new play. Westport Country Playhouse will present Sedition by David Wiltse, with artistic director Tazewell Thompson coordinating the collaboration between the playwright, designers, and director. Eugene O'Neill Memorial Theater Center, Inc. (aka O'Neill Center) Waterford, CT $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the National Playwrights Conference and the National Music Theater Conference. The project will include the creation and development of new plays and musical theater works. Goodspeed Opera House Foundation, Inc. (aka Goodspeed Musicals) East Haddam, CT $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the revival, restoration, and production of a classic musical theater work with accompanying educational activities. Greg Ganakas will direct High Button Shoes with music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Sammy Cahn, and book by George Abbott and Phil Silvers. Hartford Jazz Society, Inc. Bloomfield, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support jazz concerts and related educational activities. Pianist Geri Allen and trumpeter Roy Hargrove will be presented in separate concerts and will give master classes at an area high school and music conservatory. Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Inc. Hartford, CT $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Martin Luther King I Have a Dream Celebration Concert and school and community concerts. Plans for the eighth annual concert include school performances, outreach performances in community organizations, and concerts featuring performances and compositions by African American and Latino artists. Institute for Community Research, Inc. Hartford, CT $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Southern New England Apprenticeship Program. A collaboration with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, the program will bring together master artists and apprentices from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Institute for Community Research, Inc. Hartford, CT $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the 17th year of the Connecticut Cultural Heritage Program. Activities will include fieldwork, programming, and training. Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts Old Lyme, CT $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the ArtReach visual arts education program. Scholarships will be made available to underserved children to strengthen their pre-college portfolio, enhancing their competitiveness in college applications. Yale University (on behalf of Yale University Art Gallery) New Haven, CT $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the conservation treatment of Japanese paintings and screens in the Yale University Art Gallery permanent collection. Treated by consultant conservators expert in the field of Asian art, the restored works will play an active role in the museum's permanent collection galleries.
