NORTH CAROLINA Alleghany County Schools Sparta, NC $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM). The program will include after-school instruction in Appalachian traditional folk music and dance for students in third through eighth grades; a performance at a day-long summer gathering; interactive Web site pedagogical forums for artists, teachers, and administrators; and publication of teaching resources in Old Time Herald, a folk music quarterly magazine. Allegro Foundation Charlotte, NC $12,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support dance classes targeted for children with physical and learning disabilities. Working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg public schools, the foundation will provide weekly dance instruction by specially trained peer tutors. Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Society, Inc. (aka Charlotte Symphony) Charlotte, NC $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a tour of The Mill Village: A Piedmont Rhapsody and related educational activities. Created by local composer David Crowe, the multimedia work uses photography, video, live narration, and symphonic music to tell the story of the social and economic transitions that occurred in mill communities of the Carolina Piedmont. Cultural Education Collaborative, Inc. (aka ArtsTeach) Charlotte, NC $40,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support ArtStart. Teachers and teaching artists will collaborate to integrate arts into the curriculum for third and fourth graders. Greenville Choral Society & New Carolina Sinfonia Greenville, NC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Rising Voices in the East: Music Reaching New and Diverse Audiences. Concerts will take place for economically disadvantaged seniors and youth in rural communities. Mint Museum of Art, Inc. (aka Mint Museums) Charlotte, NC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the publication of a catalogue of the works of British-born American artist, illustrator, and author Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (1898-1989). The catalogue will correspond with an exhibition of a significant collection of Leighton's works recently donated to the Mint. North Carolina Arts Council Raleigh, NC $733,300 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. North Carolina Folklife Institute (Consortium) Durham, NC $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Community Folklife Documentation Institute. A partnership with the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, the project will provide training in the documentation and presentation of local and regional folklife traditions for community organizations, arts councils, and institutions. North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation, Inc. (aka NCMA) Raleigh, NC $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support The Art of Collaboration, an arts education initiative. The museum will collaborate with two middle schools to design innovative teacher training and curriculum planning tools to promote integrated instruction of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Opera Carolina Charlotte, NC $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Music!Words!Opera! Professional artists and technicians will work with students in the classroom to write and produce an original opera. Penland School of Crafts, Inc. Penland, NC $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the Teaching Artist Initiative. The program's several components are designed to address inadequate arts instruction in rural western North Carolina. Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre Mars Hill, NC $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of a new musical theater work celebrating Appalachian music and culture. Minstrel of the Appalachians is a musical biography of historian and archivist of traditional music Bascom Lamar Lunsford with script by playwright Randy Noojin.
