TEXAS Alley Theatre Houston, TX $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Playwriting 360 Degrees. The program will provide sequential, in-class playwriting instruction for high school students during a 12-week period. Amarillo Art Center Association (aka Amarillo Museum of Art) Amarillo, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the exhibition Amarillo Biennial 600: Clay, with accompanying catalogue and education programs. The exhibition will be curated from works submitted by artists living within a 600-mile radius of Amarillo. Art's for Everyone, Inc. Encinal, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the Rural Filmmaker Exchange. During the summer of 2007, filmmakers from Appalshop will conduct workshops and residencies for Encinal youth media makers and others; the following summer, filmmakers from Art's for Everyone will travel to the Appalchian Media Institute at Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky, to share work and ideas. This series of youth outreach activities, undertaken in partnership with the San Antonio School District, is designed to engage youth with contemporary art in a substantive way. Aurora Picture Show Houston, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the publication of A Microcinema Primer. The book will provide a comprehensive history of American small alternative cinemas. Austin Museum of Art, Inc. Austin, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Seeing Special Things. The year-long, sequential visual arts program, serving approximately 450 underserved elementary students, is designed to enhance classroom arts education and develop visual literacy and critical thinking skills. Ballet East Dance Company (aka Ballet East Dance Theatre) Austin, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support a series of educational programs to expose students to dance. The project will take inner city high school students to dance performances and bring dancers and choreographers into the school for master classes and instruction in dance and choreography. Big Thought Dallas, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Summer in the City, a series of excursions for youth to arts centers, museums, and cultural institutions. A partnership with the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs, the project will provide more than 4,500 students and family members with citywide cultural field trips. City of Austin, Texas (on behalf of Economic Growth & Redevelopment Services Office) (Consortium) Austin, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the assessment of the city's public art holdings and the development of a conservation and maintenance plan. In partnership with the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, the Cultural Arts Division will develop a plan of action for the preservation of the city's 150-piece public art collection. Conspirare, Inc. (aka Conspirare: Craig Hella Johnson & Company of) Austin, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Border Crossings, a tour of performances and educational activities, and a CD recording of the program. Tour activities will begin in four border cities of the Rio Grande Valley area of south Texas including Brownsville, Edinburg, Harlingen, and McAllen and then travel to Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and Austin. Dallas Museum of Art Dallas, TX $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support the digitization and documentation of the works on paper collection. The collection represents approximately one-fourth of the museum's collection of 21,000 works of art. Dallas Theater Center Dallas, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the Project Discovery Young Patron Program. The program will provide access to the artistic process free-of-charge to students and teachers. Diaz Music Institute (aka DMI - Caliente) Houston, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support the Latin Jazz Summer Workshop. Students in grades pre-K through 12 will receive instruction in the music and culture of Latin and Afro-Caribbean jazz. DiverseWorks, Inc. (aka DiverseWorks Art Space) (Consortium) Houston, TX $18,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the annual DiverseWorks Artists Retreat and Creative Capital Professional Development Workshop for visual and performing artists. In collaboration with the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County, the project will teach artists about the business aspects of their work and how to develop workable plans for sustaining their creative careers. El Paso Symphony Orchestra Association, Inc. El Paso, TX $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support youth orchestral music activities. The project includes yearly auditions, weekly rehearsals, master classes, and quarterly concerts for 350 students, starting at age seven. Esperanza Peace and Justice Center San Antonio, TX $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Arte es Vida Westside Cultural Grounding Project. The project aims to revitalize San Antonio's Westside community life by organizing and presenting public events, concerts, dance performances, and workshops that will engage community members in cultural activities stemming from the neighborhood's historical highlights. Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Association, Inc. (aka Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra) Fort Worth, TX $22,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a touring program. Concerts and educational programs will take place in five rural communities in north central Texas. Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (aka Guadalupe) San Antonio, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Building Bridges project. High school students will participate in workshops in dance, music, puppetry, and visual arts forms relevant to San Antonio's Hispanic cultural heritage culminating in a dance presentation incorporating all of the disciplines. Houston Chamber Choir Houston, TX $75,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Choral Music To support an American Masterpieces Choral Music Festival. The three-day festival will feature performances of American choral music, including new works commissioned for the festival, as well as master classes and seminars. Inprint, Inc. Houston, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the Inprint Brown Reading Series. Now in its 26th year, the project has brought more than 250 distinguished writers to Houston. Junior Players Guild Dallas, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Passing Zone Partnership, an after-school program of arts classes in theater, visual arts, dance, creative writing, and music. Elementary school students will attend classes held in 21st Century Community Learning Center sites in the Dallas Independent School District. Kuumba House, Inc. (aka Kuumba House Dance Theatre) Houston, TX $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support instruction in South African dancing, drumming, mask making, and storytelling. Activities will culminate in a performance of Amasiko in celebration of the African American holiday of Kwanzaa. Lamar University Beaumont, TX $9,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support a traveling exhibition featuring the work of deaf artists. The project, based on an open call to artists, will open at the Dishman Museum in Beaumont and be curated by Brenda Schertz, a nationally known curator and museum accessibility consultant. Lawndale Art & Performance Center (aka Lawndale Art Center) Houston, TX $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support a program to provide artists with access to studio space, equipment, technical support, and an honorarium. Artists responding to an open call will be selected by a panel of artists, curators, and critics for residency periods of nine months. Lyric Stage, Inc. Irving, TX $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a production of Carousel performed with a full orchestra. Lyric Stage will produce Carousel, by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein, with Don Walker's original and restored orchestrations. Mexic-Arte Austin, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support production of an online catalogue, a publication, and video documentation of the 12th annual Young Latino Artist Exhibition. The exhibition will be guest-curated and will feature the work of Latino artists from Texas and northern Mexico who are younger than 35 years of age. Motion Media Arts Center (aka Austin School of Film) (Consortium) Austin, TX $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the 2007 Conference of the National Alliance of Media Arts Centers. In collaboration with the National Alliance of Media Arts Centers, Austin School of Film and 11 other Texas-based media arts organizations will plan and host the bi-annual event. Motion Media Arts Center (aka Austin School of Film) Austin, TX $34,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Austin School of Film's Youth Program, activities designed to advance media literacy. With guidance from professional media artists, students will learn all aspects of filmmaking and will create, present, and distribute their work. Museum of the Southwest Midland, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Museum To support conservation treatment of works in the museum's permanent collection. The project will focus on prints by Native American artist Woody Crumbo (1912-1989) and works in the museum's sculpture park. National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (aka NALAC) San Antonio, TX $45,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the Seventh Leadership Institute and Regional Arts Training Workshops. Both components will offer Latino cultural organizations opportunities for organizational and professional development. Riverwalk Jazz San Antonio, TX $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the weekly public radio jazz series Riverwalk Jazz. Distributed by Public Radio International to 155 stations nationwide, each hour-long program combines live performance with interviews, oral histories, and historical recordings to celebrate important artists and eras in jazz history. Southwest Key Program, Inc. Austin, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the East Austin Student Theater Project. The program will offer theater training to middle and high school students from low-income and underserved Latino neighborhoods. Southwest School of Art & Craft San Antonio, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the Visiting Artist Program. Artists with specialized knowledge in an arcane technical area, or who have applied a traditional method toward innovative ends, will be invited to conduct workshops. Talento Bilingüe de Houston (aka TBH) Houston, TX $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support a series of Latino art presentations. Local and regional artists will be featured in exhibitions, theater performances, a film series, and educational outreach activities.
Texas A & M Research Foundation (on behalf of Callaloo Journal) College Station, TX $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support Writing the Self and Community, a series of public readings and writing workshops organized by the journal Callaloo. Proposed writers for the 2007-08 season include Percival Everett, Forrest Hamer, Helen Elaine Lee, and Natasha Trethewey. Kerrville, TX $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of a documentary radio series about the history of rockabilly music. Whole Lotta Shakin' will examine the musical roots and legacy of this energetic mix of blues, gospel, jazz, and country music that was a cornerstone of rock and roll in the 1950s. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (aka State Parks Division) Austin, TX $35,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a Web site for The Look of Nature: Designing Texas State Parks during the Great Depression. The Web site will promote stewardship of cultural landscapes created by the Civil Conservation Corps. University of Texas at Austin (on behalf of Center for Sustainable Development) Austin, TX $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support a New Orleans-based training project that will use salvaged materials for rebuilding and making furniture. The Center for Sustainable Development will connect local resources and residents with architects and designers to create an economy based on sustainable building practices. University of Texas at Dallas (on behalf of American Literary Translators Association) Richardson, TX $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support services to enhance the professional development of literary translators. Activities include the 30th anniversary conference of the American Literary Translators Association, publication of a newsletter and issues of the Translation Review, and continued development of a Web site. Virtuosi of Houston Houston, TX $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support chamber music performed by young, emerging artists. Concerts will be held in Zilkha Hall of the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts in Houston. Writer's Garret Dallas, TX $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support The Writer's Studio, a radio show broadcast on KERA Public Radio FM. Taped in front of a live audience, the show features interviews with established authors. Writers In the Schools Houston, TX $50,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support WITS Impact: Creative Writing for Teachers and Students. Professional writers will provide in-service training for teachers and year-long creative writing workshops for approximately 1,200 students in 36 elementary and middle schools. Zachary Scott Theater Center Austin, TX $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of Caroline, or Change with accompanying education and outreach activities. Artistic director Dave Steakley will direct Caroline, or Change by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori with choreography by Robin Lewis and music direction by Emmy Award-winner Allen Robertson.
