VIRGINIA Association of Writers & Writing Programs (aka AWP) Fairfax, VA $70,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the production, printing, and distribution of The Writer's Chronicle and the AWP Job List, continued development of the AWP Web site, and the 2008 AWP conference in New York City. AWP will promote the publications and annual conference through a 200,000-piece direct-mail campaign. Barter Foundation, Incorporated State Theatre of Virginia (Consortium) Abingdon, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the development and production of Tradin' Paint, a new work by Catherine Bush about the world of stock car racing. In partnership with the Bristol VA/TN Chamber of Commerce, the production will be presented at Barter Theater's home in Abingdon, at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Bristol, and at the Bristol Motor Speedway during the late summer NASCAR race. Daily Poetry Association (aka Poetry Daily) Charlottesville, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the online publication, Poetry Daily, found at poems.com. The journal features a new poem every day of the year, as well as criticism and links to contemporary poetry and poets. Greater Washington Educational Telecommunications Association, Inc. (aka WETA) Arlington, VA $100,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production of a series of arts news reports. Each six- to ten-minute report will be included on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, which airs five nights a week on PBS. Green Blue Institute (aka GreenBlue) Charlottesville, VA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support the development of an online library of sustainable packaging design. The library will serve as an information resource for product and packaging designers, educators, and design students. Jefferson Center Foundation, Ltd. (aka Jefferson Center) Roanoke, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support The Other Side of the Tracks, a series of presentations addressing local issues of race, ethnicity, and history. Visual, performing, and literary works will be used to facilitate a dialogue with the community. Piedmont Environmental Council Warrenton, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support public participation in a community planning process. Forums, tours, location-specific visuals, and outreach activities will educate community residents on the importance of design around a new light-rail system in Northern Virginia. Richmond Ballet (Consortium) Richmond, VA $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Minds in Motion (MIM). Created in partnership with the Valentine Richmond History Center, the 28-week program will introduce as many as 1,500 fourth-grade students to dance movement, performance skills, and choreography. Traveling Players Ensemble Great Falls, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Traveling Players Ensemble Summer Theatre Camp. Working in groups of 12 to 14 students, each ensemble of actors will produce and perform a classical theater piece by either Moliere or Shakespeare. Virginia Commission for the Arts Richmond, VA $612,400 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy (Consortium) Charlottesville, VA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the Folklife Apprenticeship Program. A collaboration with the Virginia Commission on the Arts, the program will ensure that Virginia's folkways receive new life and vibrancy by engaging new learners and reinvigorating master practitioners. Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy (on behalf of Virginia Festival of the Book) Charlottesville, VA $20,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the 14th annual Virginia Festival of the Book. The five-day festival will feature author readings, lectures, and writing workshops free-of-charge. Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts Vienna, VA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and distribution of the radio series Center Stage from Wolf Trap. The series provides national audiences with chamber music performances recorded at the Barns of Wolf Trap near Washington, DC.
