WASHINGTON 5th Avenue Theatre Association Seattle, WA $60,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a production of West Side Story, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, with accompanying outreach and educational activities. Associate artistic director William Berry will direct the production in collaboration with Seattle's Spectrum Dance Theatre led by Donald Byrd. 5th Avenue Theatre Association Seattle, WA $40,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support the production of a contemporary musical with accompanying educational and outreach activities. David Bennett will direct Sunday in the Park with George created by the Pulitzer Prize-winning team of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and book writer James Lapine. Artist Trust: A Resource for Washington Seattle, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Information Services, a variety of professional development resources for Washington State artists. Information will be shared with artists through training sessions, print publications, Web sites, e-mail, a toll-free phone line, and community workshops. Arts and Visually Impaired Audiences (aka AVIA) Seattle, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support a series of audio production workshops and mentorships for visually impaired adults and youth. The program will introduce visually impaired people to the creative possibilities and latest techniques of audio production. Arts Corps Seattle, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the All-City Program. Local artists will teach advanced-level weekly classes in choral singing, poetry writing and performance, collage and painting, break dancing, and digital photography. Arts West Seattle, WA $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Summer Musical Theater Program. Professional actors and producers will lead classes in the arts combined with rehearsals, culminating in student performances of Disney's High School Musical, Gerome Ragni and James Rado's Hair, and George Keating, Kyle Hall, and Scott Fergusen's Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr. Associated Recreation Council (aka Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center) Seattle, WA $12,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support a production of the Obie Award-winning play Dinah Was by Oliver Goldstick at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. The play chronicles the life of African American musical icon Dinah Washington and the obstacles facing black artists in the turbulent years of the civil rights movement. Cultural Development Authority of King County (aka 4Culture) Seattle, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the creation of 4Culture's e4c, a new gallery space for electronic media artists. The gallery, to be located at the Tashiro Kaplan (TK) Artists Loft Building, will exhibit electronic artworks selected through a panel process. Cultural Development Authority of King County (aka 4Culture) (Consortium) Seattle, WA $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Local Arts Agencies To support the King County Performance Network (KCPN) in the presentation of site-specific performances. In partnership with the Duvall Cultural Commission, 4Culture will present jury-selected performances at suburban and rural venues throughout King County. Evergreen State College Olympia, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Folk and Traditional Arts To support the third Northwest Native Carvers Gathering and exhibition. The event brings together carvers to share and develop skills, discuss issues related to their art, and document and celebrate their traditions. Freehold Theatre Lab Studio Seattle, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater To support the Engaged Theatre Program. The program brings theater and interactive workshops to underserved populations and will include residencies and a full production of Shakespeare's Cymbeline. Glass Art Society, Inc. Seattle, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support production of the Glass Art Society Journal. The publication will document events, exhibitions, and proceedings of the organization's annual conference to be held in Pittsburgh in June 2007. Jack Straw Foundation (Consortium) Seattle, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Do Tell: Multicultural Family Stories, a media arts education project. Developed and implemented in partnership with SouthEast Effective Development, the project will involve students creating oral history-based audio vignettes and radio theater about family stories and cultural celebrations. Museum of Northwest Art La Conner, WA $30,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the MoNA Link Program. Students will participate in multiple museum visits, receive hands-on lessons, and exhibit their work; teachers will participate in a five-day summer institute and throughout the year receive ongoing training and mentoring from museum staff. Music of Remembrance Seattle, WA $7,500 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support Sparks of Glory, a number of free concerts and lectures featuring repertoire from the period of the Holocaust. The 90-minute events will be presented at the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Seattle. One Reel Seattle, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the literary component of the 2007 Bumbershoot Festival of the Arts, which has an annual attendance of more than 200,000. Proposed artists include Michael Cunningham, Edward P. Jones, Walter Mosley, Vikram Seth, Ned Vizzini, Curtis Sittenfeld, Adam Felber, Michael Chabon, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Sekou Sundiata. Pat Graney Performance, Inc. (aka Pat Graney Company) Seattle, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support a performance/installation project incorporating video projections. The work will be created by choreographer Pat Graney, in collaboration with choreographer/media artist Ellen Bromberg. Richard Hugo House Seattle, WA $5,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support the Hugo Literary Series, featuring readings and intensive classes by acclaimed writers. Selected writers will be commissioned to generate new literary work on a specific theme and present that work to the public. Seattle Arts & Lectures (aka SAL) (Consortium) Seattle, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Literature To support a series of poetry readings and on-stage interviews with poets in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. In partnership with Literary Arts Inc., the organizations will mail promotional brochures to more than 27,000 individuals. Seattle Arts & Lectures Seattle, WA $40,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Getting the Word Out. The project will advance student writing through publications, recordings, readings, performances, and collaborations with community partners. Seattle International Children's Festival Seattle, WA $30,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support the 22nd annual Seattle International Children's Festival, the ninth annual Festival in Tacoma, and related education and outreach activities. The project also will provide teachers with an enriched curriculum by linking the festivals' cultural opportunities to classroom activities. Seattle Opera (Consortium) Seattle, WA $40,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Opera Goes to School. In partnership with the Auburn Arts Commission, the project involves Seattle Opera staff, teaching artists, and professional singers teaching students about opera during week-long residencies at eight elementary schools. Seattle Repertory Theatre (Consortium) Seattle, WA $75,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Bringing Theater Into the Classroom. A partnership with the Seattle Children's Theatre, the program will provide classroom residencies in which professional artists and teachers combine theater education and concepts of literacy into their classroom curriculum. Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Inc. (aka Seattle Symphony) Seattle, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support a CD recording of Peter Ibbetson, an opera by composer Deems Taylor (1882-1966). The CD recording also will include symphonies and other works by composer William Schuman (1910-92) for distribution by Naxos of America as part of its American Classics series. Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Inc. (aka Seattle Symphony) (Consortium) Seattle, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support ACCESS, outreach performances and educational events for underserved communities. In partnership with the Associated Recreation Council, the orchestra will engage children and families in diverse neighborhoods of Seattle. Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras Seattle, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the Academic Year Orchestral Program. Students will gain music skills from sectional coaching, weekly orchestral rehearsals, and mentoring activities provided by the Seattle Symphony musicians. Spokane Symphony Society (aka Spokane Symphony) Spokane, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Music To support engagement concerts and educational outreach in underserved communities. The Spokane Symphony will perform orchestral concerts for the Spokane Indian Tribe-Wellpinit community. Tacoma Art Museum Tacoma, WA $15,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support Youth Connect: Tacoma Art Museum High School Internship Program. After studying with museum staff, 11th-and 12th- grade high school interns will provide elementary or home-school classrooms with art-based lessons and will serve as docents for a museum tour. Town Hall Association (aka Town Hall Seattle) Seattle, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Presenting To support Global Rhythms, a series featuring traditional and international performers. Performances and related educational activities will be developed through community partnerships. Velocity Dance Center Seattle, WA $10,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Dance To support the 11th anniversary of a summer dance festival. The Strictly Seattle Dance Intensive offers instruction by Seattle artists and includes programs for beginning to professional dancers. Village Theatre Issaquah, WA $50,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Musical Theater To support a production of the rock opera The Who's Tommy directed by associate artistic director Brian Yorkey. The work will be produced at the Francis J. Gaudette Theatre in Issaquah followed by a tour to the Everett Performing Arts Center. Washington State Arts Commission Olympia, WA $683,800 CATEGORY: Partnership FIELD/DISCIPLINE: State & Regional To support Partnership Agreement activities. Washington State University Pullman, WA $25,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Choral Music To support an American Masterpieces Choral Music Festival. The two-day festival will include performances of American choral music, workshops, the creation and presentation of a new work by composer-in-residence Dr. Charles Argersinger, outreach performances in rural areas of central and eastern Washington and northern Idaho, and a culminating mass choral performance. Wellpinit School District #49 Wellpinit, WA $18,000 CATEGORY: Learning in the Arts FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Learning in the Arts for Children & Youth To support the development of a Native American arts curriculum. Tribal elders will teach basketry, plateau flute, and drumming lessons, incorporating the curriculum into other academic subjects. Wing Luke Memorial Foundation (aka Wing Luke Asian Museum) Seattle, WA $37,000 CATEGORY: Access to Artistic Excellence FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Design To support preservation and exhibition of spaces in a historic 1910 single-room occupancy hotel originally sited in Seattle's Chinatown. Exhibits at the Wing Luke Asian Museum will incorporate historic furnishings, artifacts, documents, photographs, and oral histories.
