Musical Theater

American Music Theater Festival, Inc. (aka Prince Music Theater)

To support production of the rarely produced musical Jamaica at the Prince Music Theater, with education and outreach activities. With book by E.Y. "Yip" Harburg and Fred Saidy, music by Harold Arlen, and lyrics by Yip Harburg, the production will include new orchestrations that incorporate Caribbean instrumentation.

To support a production of Beauty and the Beast. Abe Reynold will direct the production by the Red Mountain Theatre Company, with music director Carolyn Violi and choreographer Jacob Toth.

Goodspeed Opera House Foundation, Inc. (aka Goodspeed Musicals)

To support the restoration of Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by composer and lyricist Roger Miller and book writer William Hauptman, adapted from the novel by Mark Twain. Rob Ruggiero will direct the production with his creative team of designers, orchestrators, and arrangers.

To support a production of The King and I by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The classical American musical score will include a full 32-piece orchestra playing Robert Russell Bennett's original orchestrations.

Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Inc.

To support the production debut of a contemporary musical, with accompanying educational activities. Urinetown, with book and lyrics by Greg Kotis and music by Mark Hollman, will be produced during the 2008 season.

Mad River Theater Works

To support a collaborative play-making process with residents of farms and small towns. Jeff Hooper, founding director, will be the playwright and Bob Lucas, music director and performer, will compose the songs.

Music Theatre of Wichita, Inc.

To support the production of Big River, by composer and lyricist Roger Miller and book writer William Hauptman, adapted from the novel by Mark Twain. As part of the theater's 37th season, the production will be directed and choreographed by Mark Madama with music direction by Thomas Wesley Douglas.

To support the world premiere of the contemporary staged oratorio, Arjuna's Dilemma. The creative team will include composer Douglas Cuomo, visual designer Hillary Leone, director Robin Guarino, and music director Alan Johnson.

National Hispanic Cultural Center Foundation (Consortium)

To support the National Zarzuela Institute. Designed to promote the development of musical theater artists in zarzuela and Spanish and Latin American concert repertoire, the project also will support the preservation of zarzuela in the United States.

To support The Next Link Project at the New York Musical Theatre Festival. The writer assistance program will provide new writers with the access and tools needed to develop their careers and present their work to the industry and the public.

To support the restoration, remounting, and staged concert productions of musicals in the Encores! Series. The annual series of rarely heard American musicals will be performed in New York City Center's 2,753-seat theater.

Phoenix Theatre, Inc.

To support the expansion of the Phoenix Theatre's Technical Theatre Training Program. In existence for two years, the program will expand to include musical theater performers for the first time.

Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre Co., Inc.

To support the Musical Theater Workshop, focusing on musical theater playwriting for Latino playwrights. The project will take place under the supervision of Yale Drama School alumnus, Allen Davis III.

Springer Opera House Arts Association, Inc.

To support Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by composer and lyricist Roger Miller and book writer William Hauptman. Adapted from the novel by Mark Twain, the production will be performed in Springer's 600-seat theater, Emily Woodruff Hall.

To support a national tour of theater productions for young audiences. Theaterworks/USA will provide audiences in as many as 30 states and the District of Columbia with access to live theater and educational activities that complement school curricula.

York Theatre Company, Inc. (Consortium)

To support the musical Blind Lemon Blues written by Ala Govenar and Akin Babatunde, with musical arrangements by Cavin Yarbrough, Alisa Yarbrough, and Akin Babatunde. In collaboration with Documentary Arts of Texas, the production will be based on the life of Blind Lemon Jefferson, the biggest-selling country-blues singer in the 1920s.

Young at Heart Chorus (aka Young@Heart)
Northampton, MA

To support the production of Last Call. With No Theater, the new work will investigate American secular and spiritual music of the 20th century.
