To support artist fees for the Composer Librettist Development Program, a full-time resident artist initiative to provide professional training for emerging opera composers and librettists. Artists are selected annually to participate in the tuition-free program that provides training by master artists like composer-librettist Mark Adamo, composer Daniel Catán, composer Anthony Davis, librettist William Hoffman, and dramaturge Cori Ellison.

To support performances of the North American premiere of Agostino Steffani's 1668 opera Niobe, Queen of Thebes (aka Niobe) and Handel's Acis and Galatea (aka Acis). Activities will include performances as the centerpiece of the 16th biennial festival and exhibition; a tour of Niobe to Sweden and Germany; and the world premiere CD and DVD recordings of the operas which will be broadcast worldwide via National Public Radio and the British Broadcasting Corporation.

To support the Vacation Week Institute for Teens, Exploring Opera: Brundibár. In partnership with Wheelock Family Theatre, a collaborative program tying opera and theater together will offer in-depth training for students in acting exercises, vocal and movement improvisation, exploration of blocking, and scene rehearsals.

To support the East Coast premiere of Il Postino by composer Daniel Catán. The opera will feature newly commissioned reduced orchestration to be performed by players from Orchestra2001, a new music ensemble based in Philadelphia, and will be presented in Spanish in Camden's Gordon Theater and Philadelphia's Perelman Theater.

To support the School Performances Program. A partnership with the arts learning organization Big Thought, the project will feature Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), with accompanying outreach and educational components including the development of teachers' guides, CDs, DVDs, lesson plans, and educational games for youth.

Des Moines Metro Opera, Inc. (Consortium)

To support the Opera Iowa Touring Educational Troupe, a program that will engage artists to reach students in underserved rural Midwestern schools. In partnership with the Iowa City Community School District, Des Moines Metro Opera will mount fully-staged touring productions of Malcolm Fox's Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing for kindergarten to 6th-grade students and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) for 7th through 12th-grade students, and provide advanced teacher training  through Iowa Public Television's cable network, reaching every school in Iowa.

To support a production of Federico Moreno Torroba's Luisa Fernanda. A partnership with the SaludArte Foundation, the project will include a dress rehearsal that will attract up to 1,200 students from more than 40 Miami-Dade County public high schools.

To support a new production of two one-act operas. Presented in a double bill, A Blizzard in Marblehead Neck by Jeanine Tesori and Tony Kushner and Later the Same Evening by John Musto and Mark Campbell will feature soprano Patricia Schuman, and baritones David Pitzinger and Jake Gardner.

To support the Student Matinee Program, featuring performances of Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). In partnership with the Houston Independent School District, transportation and tickets will be provided to middle school students to attend mainstage performances by young artists from the company's internationally-renowned training program.

To support Die Fledermaus (The Bat) by composer Johann Strauss II. Performances will mark the company's 50th anniversary season and will commemorate the company's production of the work in its first season.

To support Opera Prep, a comprehensive outreach program aimed at reaching high school students. In partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District, the year-long initiative will engage students in all aspects of the business of opera, including artistic, technical, and administrative activities.

To support Prelude to Performance, a professional development program to provide vocal and theatrical training to emerging opera artists. The six-week intensive program will train as many as 40 aspiring opera professionals in the areas of movement, music, language, and role study.

To support a production of a fully staged or concert opera featuring young artists. In partnership with the Juilliard School, the opera will be conducted by NEA Opera Honoree Maestro James Levine at Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharpe Theater and will feature members of the Met's Lindemann's Young Artist Program and the Juilliard Orchestra.

To support a new production of The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti. The production will mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth, and will engage a creative team to include director Robert Swedberg, set and costume designer Monika Essen, conductor Suzanne Mallare Acton, with Meredith Arwady performing in the title role.

To support electronic platforms of professional development activities, multimedia tools, and field research that will benefit opera organizations and artists nationwide. The national service organization for opera will provide essential support to member artists and companies in realizing artistic excellence and service to their local communities.

To support a multi-state school tour of a new production of Hansel and Gretel by composer Engelbert Humperdinck. Teaching materials provided to schools will include a tutorial compact disc with vocal and piano parts, a teacher's guide about opera as an art form, and activities for integration of the opera into academic subjects.

To support educational outreach activities for youth and adults. Members of the resident ensemble will perform a one-act opera based on Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, and will participate in season previews, opera history seminars, and vocal and drama master classes.

To support faculty fees for a comprehensive singer training and professional development program. Faculty will provide a multidisciplinary program of study to prepare as many as 13 young artists for professional operatic careers, including vocal instruction, theatrical coaching, language classes, and guidance regarding the diverse stylistic elements of opera, musical theater, and the art song genre.

To support a new production of Orfeo ed Euridice by Chrisoph Willibald Gluck. The company will work with choreographer Yannis Adoniou from KUNST-STOFF dance company in San Francisco and with Santa Barbara's State Street Ballet.

To support workshop activities for the youth opera Little Nemo In Slumberland by composer Daron Aric Hagen and librettist J.D. McClatchy. In partnership with the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, the two-act, 90-minute opera will incorporate innovative techniques and technologies in production design and will be designed as a vehicle for young voices.

To support the fourth annual Summer Opera Festival. The event will take place at the E.M. Pearson Theatre at Concordia University in St. Paul and will present performances of two American works -- On the Town by composer Leonard Bernstein and The Vagabond King by composer Rudolf Friml.

To support the Opera Tampa New Artists Professional Training Program. In partnership with VOICE Experience, this program will be housed at the David A. Straz Center for the Performing Arts. As many as eight participating students will receive coaching from opera professionals and will have numerous performance opportunities.

To support professional training programs for singers and fully-staged opera performances. Filene Young Artists and Opera Studio Artists will receive individualized training from music and language coaches, directors, and conductors, and will perform solo and supporting roles in three fully-staged operas.
