To support Melodies and Musings - Our Appalachian Legacy, a series of dulcimer workshops targeted to older adults. The lessons will culminate in a public concert featuring the workshop participants, as well as professional musicians including Bill Collins, Steve Eulberg, Heidi Muller, and Butch Ross.

Borderlands Theater Teatro Fronterizo, Inc.

To support the production of Agnes Under the Big Top, a new work by Aditi Brennan Kapil. The work explores the intersecting lives of recent immigrants to this country and will be presented at the Zuzi Theater and other community venues for audiences drawn from throughout Tucson.

To support the Cochise Community Creative Writing Celebration. Among the proposed authors for the annual, two-day literary conference and reading series are Beth Alvarado, Denise Chavez, Cynthia Hogue, and Marge Pellegrino.

To support the Arizona Chinese New Year Festival. Guest artists will include pipa soloist Xian Zhao, guzheng soloist Yadi Jin, and dizi soloist Wang Hongliang.

West Valley Fine Arts Council
Surprise, AZ

To support the Gallery 37 - Arizona Centennial Project featuring the creation of a mural for installation in Estrella Mountain Regional Park. Gallery 37, the council's signature youth arts employment program, engages students ages 15 to 18 with professional artists to design, create, and install permanent pieces of public art in the West Valley.

ARKANSAS

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Society, Inc.
Little Rock, AR

To support performances and workshops featuring the work of composer Michael Torke and percussionist Alexej Gerassimez. Torke's Mojave Concerto for Marimba will be the featured presentation during the performances to take place at the Robinson Center Music Hall in Little Rock.

Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas
Pine Bluff, AR

To support an exhibition and residency program, Painting Your Way Out of a Corner: Using Life Struggles to Create Art, featuring the work of Mary Lovelace O'Neal. O'Neal will conduct lecture-demonstrations for area high school and University of Arkansas Pine Bluff students.

To support Giving Voice: A Festival of Writing & the Arts. High school students and community members, as well as university students and faculty, will participate in workshops and readings presented by nonfiction writer Brian Doyle, fiction writer Kevin Brockmeier, poet Gwen Hart, and songwriter Traci Rae Letellier.

CALIFORNIA

3rd I South Asian Independent Film (aka 3rd i Films)
San Francisco, CA

To support the South Asian International Film Festival. The 10th annual festival will include full-length features, documentaries, and short films by South Asian filmmakers from the United States, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Europe, Canada, and the South Asian diaspora, with a special program called Bombay Noir featuring guest filmmakers Anurag Kashyap and Sriram Raghavan.

API Cultural Center (aka Oakland Asian Cultural Center)
Oakland, CA

To support the development of A History of the Body, performed by artists from the Pagbabalik (Return) Project. The multidisciplinary, spoken word performance piece will explore the ways body images of immigrants are affected by cultural, historical, and media influences.

Classics for Kids, Inc.
San Diego, CA

To support Las Tradiciones Musicales Concert Series & Educational Workshops, featuring Mexican musical traditions. Guest artists, including the Leyenda Dance Company, Jeff Nevin, and Mariachi Garibaldi, will participate in the bilingual concert series for audiences from throughout San Diego County.

To support Tales of Pangu, a full-length interdisciplinary program featuring the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance Men's Chorus. With music and song from the men's chorus, the work will present ancient Chinese creation myths and the stories of Pangu, a central figure in Chinese mythology.

To support the Latino History Month Music & Dance Program, a series of workshops and concerts highlighting the folklorico, salsa, and tango genres. Potential participating musical ensembles include La Santa Cecilia, Orquesta La Fiebre, and La Mariachi Estrela de Jalisco.

To support a performance by Alonzo King LINES Ballet and related outreach. Activities will include an introductory dance class for the community and a contemporary dance master class for area dance students.

Muckenthaler Cultural Center
Fullerton, CA

To support the Latino Audience Development Program, a series of performances and exhibits highlighting Latino arts and culture. Activities will include performances by Chilean flute group Chaski, Brazilian choro group Grupo Falso Baiano, and Mexican son jarocho group Son del Centro.

Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, Inc.
Oakland, CA

To support Celebrating Our Traditions in Harmony, a choral concert featuring the a cappella ensemble Vocolot. The performance will premiere several new choral pieces created by Terrance Kelly, artistic director of Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, and Linda Hirschhorn, artistic director of Vocolot that explore gospel, spirituals, folk, and world music.

Peninsula Symphony Association
Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA

To support Awakening Emotions, a concert featuring pianist Esther Keel, and related outreach activities. In addition to the concert, Keel will make presentations to students at three local Title I elementary schools.

Los Angeles, CA

To support the Visiting Artist Series, a sequence of workshops and lectures featuring mosaic artists Beth Barror, Jolino Beserra, Kim Emerson, and Lillian Sizemore. The project will target low-income residents and culminate in an exhibit of the participants' work at The Mark, an events venue in Los Angeles.

To support In the Name of Love, a musical tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring vocalist Mavis Staples. Additional artists participating in the concert will include the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the Oakland Children's Community Choir.

Rhythmix Cultural Works
Alameda, CA

To support the Island Arts Concert Series and workshops, featuring musical traditions from islands around the world. In partnership with the Alameda Boys & Girls Club and Girls Incorporated of the Island City, youth will participate in workshops taught by the guest artists. Proposed artists include Gamelan Seka Jaya (Bali), Hanayui (Japan), Helladelics (Greece), and the John Santos Sextet (pan-Caribbean).

San Diego Dance Theatre (aka Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater)

To support Trolley Dances, featuring original works by choreographers Jean Isaacs, Joe Alter, Monica Bill Barnes, and Greg Sample. The project will be produced in partnership with the Metropolitan Transit System and be presented on the Mission Valley Trolley Line for both students and the general public.

To support “Jazz Reflections” and related outreach activities.

Redding, CA

To support a design project, Sails Over Old City Hall Courtyard. A new design will be developed for the courtyard of the historic Old City Hall, the home of the Shasta County Arts Council, to make it more accommodating for outdoor cultural events.

Symphonic Jazz Orchestra
Culver City, CA

To support a community concert featuring guitarist Lee Ritenour and related outreach. Additional outreach activities will include a master class at the World Stage Arts Education and Performance Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as workshops at The Harmony Project in Hollywood and the Guadalupe Community Center in Canoga Park.

COLORADO

Creede Repertory Theatre, Inc.
Creede, CO

To support the Young Audience Outreach Tour (YAOT). The 2012 YAOT will provide professional children's theatrical performances for kindergarten through sixth-grade children in rural and underserved communities throughout Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Utah.

Crestone Performances, Inc. (aka Crestone Music Festival)
Crestone, CO

To support the Crestone Music Festival's Cultural Enrichment Initiative. Bringing performing arts originating from around the world to the rural San Luis Valley of Colorado, proposed artists for the series include Tito Puente Jr., Frank London's Klezmer Brass All-Stars, and Vieux Farka Toure, among others.

International Institute for Indigenous Resource Management, Inc.
Denver, CO

To support the Indigenous Film & Arts Festival, a showcase of documentaries, shorts, and feature films by and about Native American peoples. Actor and director Gary Farmer will appear alongside a retrospective of his work.

Pueblo Performing Arts Guild, Inc.
Pueblo, CO

To support the development of architectural designs for the Pueblo Creative Industry Building Complex. Proposed sites to undergo adaptive reuse include the Pueblo Ice House, Holmes Hardware Company Building, and the Colorado Building. Local arts organizations that commit to being housed at the facility will collaborate with the selected architects to finalize the design.

CONNECTICUT

Artists Collective, Inc.
Hartford, CT

To support a residency by Senegalese dancer and choreographer Babacar M'Baye, master drummer Cheikh M'Baye, and dance company Sing Sing Rhythm. The residency, including lecture-demonstrations for students in surrounding Hartford schools and a master workshop open to the public, will culminate in a public performance.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

Cultural Tourism DC, Inc.
Washington, DC

To support Passport DC, a program that promotes access to artistic programming at Washington, DC embassies for residents and visitors. From Australia to Zambia, the cultural tourism promotion highlights art exhibits, dance and musical performances, lectures, and films presented at more than 65 embassies.

Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital (aka DC Environmental Film Festival)
Washington, DC

To support the annual programming that will include screenings of environmentally focused films, discussions with filmmakers, and related activities. Events are free-of-charge and take place at theaters and public libraries for local public and charter school students from low-income Washington, DC neighborhoods.

Theatre Lab (aka The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts)
Washington, DC

To support The Life Stories Outreach Program for Adults. Playwright Jennifer Nelson will work with clients of the N Street Village, a not-for-profit serving low-income and homeless women, to create a play that will be performed by the project participants at a professional theater venue.

FLORIDA

ACA of Central Florida, Inc. (aka Asian Cultural Association)
Longwood, FL

To support Masters of Percussion with NEA National Heritage Fellow Zakir Hussain, featuring master tabla player Hussain and an ensemble of Indian musicians. The concert and planned free lecture-demonstration on a local college campus will address ACA's mission to encourage the preservation of the ancient performing arts traditions of Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Association of the Performing Arts of India, Inc.
Pembroke Pines, FL

To support a concert performance and lecture-demonstrations featuring Indian classical music. Proposed artists include sitarists Manju Mehta and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, accompanied by tabla players Nitin Mitta and Hetal Mehta, who will perform at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and conduct lecture-demonstrations at the Broward College central campus.

Winter Park, FL

To support performances of Sacred Slave Stories: Vivifying Black History through Contemporary Dance. Under the direction of Dario J. Moore and narrated by Harry Burney, the work will feature modern dance vignettes inspired by federally archived, African American slave narratives originating from Florida.

United Arts Council of Collier County
Naples, FL

To support a residency by the dance, percussion, and vocal ensemble, Giwayen Mata. Giwayen Mata which performs traditional dances, as well as modern works inspired by the dances of Mali, the Ivory Coast, South Africa, Guinea, and others will perform and lead workshops at schools and alternative education facilities in Immokalee and Naples, Florida.

GEORGIA

Albany State University Foundation, Inc.
Albany, GA

To support a concert performance and a master class by the Imani Winds Ensemble. Imani Winds, a chamber music ensemble, will perform in concert at the Albany Municipal Auditorium, as well as conduct a master class for students from Albany State University and area junior and senior high school students from Dougherty and Lee Counties.

American Jewish Committee
Atlanta, GA

To support the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, a cinematic examination of Jewish life, culture, and history. The festival will showcase narrative and documentary films, and present guest speakers and panel discussions featuring actors, filmmakers, academics, and authors correlated to the selected film lineup.

To support India: Land of Enchantment, a festival featuring the arts and culture of India. Festival activities will include a theatrical production, The Little Clay Cart, directed by Farley Richmond, performances of North and South Indian classical and folk dance, and poetry and literature readings for an audience drawn from Athens and surrounding communities.

Atlanta Chinese Dance Company

To support the presentation of an original Chinese dance production Celebrating the company's 21st anniversary, performances will include choreography combining both Chinese and Western dance vocabularies and will feature guest artists from the Atlanta Ballet and gloATL, a contemporary dance company based in Atlanta.

To support The Taiko Path - A Complete Art Form, a series of presentations led by staff of the Taiko Center of the Pacific including master artist Kenny Endo. Activities will target underserved institutions such as the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind and Habilitat, a drug rehabilitation center and cultural facility.

To support performances by the Ying Quartet, and related outreach activities. The artists will coach several youth orchestras, provide master classes for university students, and present a lecture-demonstration for youth of the Northwest Children's Home.

To support Uncommon River an exhibit featuring the work of artists such as Christo, Philip Govedare, and Jen Torres as well as a related outreach program. Chicago, IL

To support Say Culture Coast, a cultural tourism campaign to promote the mid-South Side of Chicago as an arts destination. Rick Valicenti, founder and design director of Thirst, a communication design firm, will develop computer-based interactive communication tools, such as a portable recording kiosk, an online story archive, and social media sites that will engage the public and encourage them to share their experiences on Chicago's "Culture Coast."

To support the Borinquen Bella Mural Project highlighting the restoration of two murals on affordable housing properties by their original artists. John Pitman Weber will update his mural Rompiendo Las Cadenas / Breaking the Chains and Hector Duarte will update his mural Honor Boricua to reflect current issues in Humboldt Park. Outreach efforts will include workshops with Weber and Boricua for local apprentice artists and the creation of a community mural.

To support the Beethoven Live! Youth Concert featuring pianist Joel Ross. Middle school students from schools serving low-income families will travel to the Coronado Performing Arts Center for the performance.

To support a cultural tourism project of West Central Indiana arts organizations through the development of a smartphone application, calendar of events, and brochures. The project, with more than 30 arts organizations participating, is a promotional project for arts and cultural activities in a six-county region.

To support performances of Beethoven Lives Upstairs by Barbara Nichols featuring actors from Classical Kids Live. The actors and full orchestra will perform several matinees for local students highlighting Beethoven's music.

To support architectural drawings for a new, on-campus performing arts center. Architectural firm Jack Kinkel and Son will develop plans that meet the needs of the university, as well as local businesses and community organizations.

University of Southern Indiana (on behalf of New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art)
Evansville, IN

To support the creation of a sound chamber sculpture by artist Juan Angel Chavez, in collaboration with local high school and university students. A similar project resulted in a sound chamber that measured 25 feet in length, 20 feet in width, and 10 feet in height. After the sound chamber is created using found objects, musicians and performers will be invited to perform within the space.

IOWA

Ames, IA

To support Imagine, a dance concert performed by the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble with a pre-performance workshop. The artists will lead a public workshop on Odissi dance, combining lecture-demonstration and class participation.

Iowa Trails Council, Inc.

To support the creation of public art on the Fairfield Loop Trail. Artist Judy Bales will design and fabricate artistic enhancements for a seating element and pedestrian maze.

KANSAS

Chamber Music At The Barn, Inc.

To support the New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) in residence in Central Kansas. In addition to performances, the NZSQ will provide youth concerts and master classes focused on classical and contemporary string chamber music shared with children from inner-city and rural communities.

To support Metamorphosis, a pair of concurrent exhibits. Industrial Nature will feature the moth and lichen found-object sculptures of Michelle Stitzlein, and Many-Fold Manifolds will feature the origami sculptures of Robert J. Lang.

KENTUCKY

City of Munfordville, Kentucky
Munfordville, KY

To support Experience Munfordville, a cell phone tour and Web site promoting the area's historic architecture and traditional arts. Content for the cultural tourism project will be developed by consultants Joanna Hay and Judy Sizemore with City of Munfordville/Tourism staff, the Hart County Historical Society, the Kentucky Folklife Program, the Kentucky Oral History Commission, and local folk artists and tradition bearers.

Liberty Hall, Inc.

To support the creation of the Frankfort Tour of Public Art and Architecture, a cultural tourism project promoting county landmarks through a cell phone tour and Web site. Kentucky State University students will conduct oral history interviews, based on training from the Kentucky Oral History Commission and the Kentucky Folklife Program, that will be included in the narration.

LOUISIANA

New Orleans Film and Video Festival, Inc. (aka New Orleans Film Society)
New Orleans, LA

To support screenings of Malcom X by Spike Lee and Rebirth of a Nation by DJ Spooky. The filmmakers will also participate in question-and-answer sessions following each film. Venues will include Ashe Cultural Arts Center, the Porch, and the Carver Theater.

Northwestern State University of Louisiana
Natchitoches, LA

To support the Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival. The theme will be "celebrating Louisiana's folk music" and will include performances by Henry Gay and the Cats, as well as Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band.

MAINE

Bowdoin International Music Festival
Brunswick, ME

To support the Bowdoin Festival Extra and Artists of Tomorrow Community Concerts and related outreach activities. An extension of the Bowdoin Festival, the proposed outreach programming includes lectures, demonstrations, and public master classes at Brunswick's Bowdoin College and off-site locations in nearby towns. It will bring together established musicians with international reputations and emerging artists to perform for diverse audiences throughout Maine's midcoast.

To support a building assessment and design plans for the adaptive reuse of the Clarence Anderson Elementary School. Activities to prepare the space for use as an arts facility will include a full energy audit, lead paint analysis, and a plan to meet ADA regulations.

MARYLAND

Artpreneurs, Inc. (aka Arts on the Block)
Silver Spring, MD

To support Common Ground, an urban design project. Under the direction of urban designer/public art planner Todd Bressi, Arts on the Block will collaborate with the University of Maryland Landscape Architecture program and the YMCA's Youth and Family Services in a community design process to transform an under-utilized parking lot into a neighborhood plaza for cultural, artistic, and recreational purposes.

Common Ground Music Harvest Ltd (aka Common Ground on the Hill)
Westminster, MD

To support a residency featuring artists Kathy "Wan Povi" Sanchez and Gilbert Sanchez. The potters will exhibit their work and conduct lecture-demonstrations and classes for Carroll County, Maryland and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania residents.

MASSACHUSETTS

3rd EyE Youth Empowerment, Inc. (aka 3rd EyE Unlimited)
New Bedford, MA

To support the 3rd EyE Open Festival. The 13th annual festival will include the creation of a mural led by painter Percy Fortini-Wright and a performance featuring musical artist Tem Blessed and dance team Phunk Phenomenon, for the benefit of an audience drawn from throughout southeastern Massachusetts.

Center for Human Development
Springfield, MA

To support the production of Hablando Con Dolores, a one-act play by playwright Dee O'Connor. The work, Talking with Dolores, examines the issue of elder depression and will be produced in Spanish for presentation to elder Latino audiences in Massachusetts and Connecticut.

Indian Hill Arts Inc. (aka Indian Hill Music Center)
Littleton, MA

To support the Guitar Festival featuring Eliot Fisk and related outreach performances. In addition to the festival, Fisk and fellow guitarist Roberto Rios will perform at the Perkins School for the Blind and the Franklin Perkins School, an organization for youth with a range of psychiatric, social, and emotional issues.

Silver Screen Film Society
Vineyard Haven, MA

To support the Martha's Vineyard International Film Festival. Activities will include an animated shorts program hosted by animator Bill Plympton and a forum with island filmmakers.

Sociedad Latina
Roxbury, MA

To support Viva Nuestra Musica!, a celebration of Latino Heritage Month. The organization will collaborate with the Berklee College of Music to present artists including the Boston Latin Band, Fiesta del Norte, Mango Blue, and Obbini Tumbao.

Theatre Espresso, Inc.
Jamaica Plain, MA

To support presentations of American Tapestry: Immigrant Children of the Bread and Roses Strike by Wendy Lement, Derek Nelson, and Megan Cooper. In commemoration of the centennial of the strike, every Lawrence Public Schools eighth grader will have the opportunity to attend the play at the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors Center.

MICHIGAN

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra
Petoskey, MI

To support a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana featuring soprano Diane Penning, baritone Stephen Hartley, and tenor Sean Copenhaver. In addition to the soloists and orchestra, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra Chorus, the Northern Michigan Chorale, and the Northern Michigan Youth Choir will also perform. Maestro Sidney Hazelwood and musicologist Dr. Robert Pattengale will lead a series of lecture-demonstrations about the masterpiece.

To support the Lansing JazzFest, which includes concerts, jam sessions, and educational workshops. Main stage performers, which have previously included Johnny O'Neal and Stanley Jordan, will perform at least one world-premiere piece.

St. Clair County Community College

To support the Patterns Visiting Artists Forum featuring author Jaimy Gordon and poet John Rybicki. In addition to public workshops and readings, the artists will provide written analyses of student work.

MINNESOTA

Chamber Music Society of St. Cloud, Inc.
St. Cloud, MN

To support a residency by the Escher String Quartet and a concert featuring the quartet with mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke. Prior to the concert, the quartet will participate in various outreach activitiesat local schools, the Boys & Girls Club, and a senior center located in this central Minnesota community.

Minneapolis Pops Orchestra Association
Minneapolis, MN

To support a series of community concerts featuring baritone Peter Halverson. In partnership with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Department, the organization will bring seniors to Nicollet Island Pavilion for as many as four concerts. An additional concert will be performed for the community in Elliot Park.

Minnesota State University Moorhead
Moorhead, MN

To support a public performance featuring James Sewell Ballet with live accompaniment by the Arsenal Trio, as well as workshops for local dance students and other outreach activities. James Sewell Ballet will provide a movement program for older adults and a school-day performance for elementary school students.

Soap Factory
Minneapolis, MN

To support the architectural design of a new building entry for the organization's facility, the former National Purity Soap Company building. The design will be developed through community charrettes and will be submitted for public hearings to the City of Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and the Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office.

MISSISSIPPI

Mississippi Festival Foundation, Inc.
Sardis, MS

To support student and public performances by the Ailey II Dance Company, as well as related outreach. Prior to the performances, a former Ailey dancer will lead workshops for area Title I schools.

To support the Music, Arts & Technology Camp. In addition to leading classes for youth and adults, professional camp staff will perform a concert for the community. Proposed artists include saxophonist Michael Giles, violinist Jeremy Starr, bassoonist Michele Hustedt, and tubist Joe Jensen.
