FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Visual Arts To support the Art in Rural Storefronts, a series of contemporary art installations. Newly commissioned work from regional artists will be selected by a jury and installed in unused, commercial sites in five rural communities. Installations will be accompanied by a custom telephone messaging system providing pre-recorded messages from each artist describing the work and giving audiences an opportunity to provide immediate feedback. The project will engage underserved tribal and urban Indian communities in the Pacific Northwest, identifying potential artists and supporting their participation in storytelling workshops held at the seventh annual Northwest Indian Storytelling Festival and the second annual NISA Retreat. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Media Arts To support the production and national distribution of the Wisdom of the Elders radio program. The series features the voices of traditional Native American elders, storytellers, musicians, cultural leaders, educators, and scientists from tribal communities in Alaska, Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Wisdom of the Elders is broadcast on 52 Native American radio stations and community and college stations.
