FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Theater and Musical Theater To support Voices from a Changing Middle East: Dialogues in the Desert, a festival exploring culture and conflict in the Middle East that will include the English language premiere of Boged: An Enemy of the People by Israeli playwrights Boaz Gaon and Nir Erez. The project will explore the Negev Desert, known for its industrial resources and growing population of Jewish and Arab Bedouin communities, and include a modern adaptation of Ibsen's An Enemy of the People that speaks to contemporary Israeli social, political, and environmental issues. FIELD/DISCIPLINE: Challenge America To support the Life Stories Outreach Program for Youth, offering dramatic arts, storytelling, and music education for male juvenile offenders in Maryland, culminating in a performance that will showcase the participants' accomplishments to a community of incarcerated youth and staff at the New Beginnings correctional facility located in Laurel, Maryland. Participants will explore the African and Caribbean percussive origins of Go-Go music with musician Matt "Swamp Guinea" Miller, who will teach juvenile offenders to use drumming to enhance their storytelling. The play explores the cultural collision between British colonialism and tribal Africa by telling the story of a young girl who is saved from a forced polygamous marriage by an African Catholic catechist, becoming his protege, and embracing colonial Britain and Christianity.
