The City of Kent established an arts commission in 1975 to provide leadership on cultural opportunities and arts education, and improve the quality of life and aesthetic environment in the city of 85,000.

Washington State's Green River Valley is host to a unique collection of land art and reclamation sites: the Herbert Bayer Earthworks, the Robert Morris Earthwork, Lorna Jordan's Waterworks Garden, and the Green River Natural Resources Area. Although less known in the local community, the works are considered significant by the international art and design community. In addition, these earthworks taken together offer model solutions to stormwater management -- a concern for flood-prone cities. To increase public awareness of these major environmental and cultural assets in the community, the City of Kent is using its MICD25 grant on an Earthworks Tour and Public Engagement Campaign. Activities will include using digital media to engage more of the public, including uploading a documentary on the Herbert Bayer Earthworks that was completed in 2009.
