This was a great evening for Great American Voices. We had fantastic interest from the local military community; Navy and local VIPs aplenty; representatives from NEA, OPERA America, and The Boeing Company present; a sold-out show; and a beautiful performance by Seattle Opera. One of the true strengths of this event was the involvement of the Commander Navy Region Northwest, Rear Admiral French. Navy personnel worked very closely with his office to make this a truly special evening. Two weeks before the performance, it was already "sold out" (though free) with a waiting list of 50 people.
Seattle Opera put on a lovely performance. The singers were dressed as if they were at a café; several were dressed as waiters, the others acted as patrons. Throughout the performance, this café theme was generally maintained and the songs were used to show different relationships between the "characters." Selected songs were quite diverse, highlighting different voice types and groupings of singers. Some songs were serious or romantic, others were quite funny. The audience was amused by the Navy theme of "There's Nothing Like a Dame" from South Pacific, which was followed by a very funny interpretation of "What a Movie" from Trouble in Tahiti. The singers were all excellent, and songs that allowed them to showcase their talents went over very well.
