The town of Taos, population 5,500, is in the north central region of New Mexico. The Town of Taos Planning and Zoning Agency and Taos Center for the Arts, in collaboration with several local arts organizations and individual artists, will start pre-development activities for the Taos Artists' Lofts project, an affordable artist live/work facility to be located in the historic district of downtown. Project activities will include initial site analysis, a full site plan, design fees, and a public design workshop. In 2009, Artspace Projects conducted a feasibility study for an affordable artist live/work development, demonstrating a strong market demand for the Taos Artists' Lofts. The lofts will provide 35 affordable units for artists and their families. It is anticipated that the lofts will have a significant impact on downtown Taos by bringing creative residents to an existing underutilized parking lot.
