University of Texas at San Antonio
San Antonio, Texas
The San Antonio Riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas, a city of approximately 1.3 million, is a world-renowned network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River lined with restaurants, bars, and shops, making it a major tourist destination.
The City of San Antonio's Office of Cultural Affairs and University of Texas at San Antonio College of Architecture, in collaboration with VIA Metropolitan Transit, will design a new downtown transit shelter along the Riverwalk. The shelter's form will be a piece of public art in itself, designed to connect the community with local cultural arts facilities. It will serve as a prototype for the local transit agency, scheduled to roll out new shelters across the city in December 2012. The shelter will be installed in River North, an area that is home to the San Antonio Museum of Art, Southwest School of Art, and the new Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. The university will host the community design process and develop a preliminary design for the shelter. Following the completion of a concept design, VIA will contract a professional firm to develop final design and construction documents.
