Town of Brattleboro
Brattleboro, Vermont, established in 1753 along the Connecticut River, is a community of 12,000 residents. The town has experienced some natural disasters recently, such as the severe flooding of the Whetstone Brook during Hurricane Irene and a major downtown fire.
The Town of Brattleboro Arts Committee and Arts Council of Windham County, in collaboration with four additional partners, are creating the Brattleboro Project, which will facilitate Brattleboro's recovery from Hurricane Irene and provide strategic direction for supporting local artistic assets. The project will proceed on three tracks: mapping of cultural assets, planning for a cultural district, and installation of an iconic piece of public art. Public art will be commissioned and installed as a public expression of the resilience and determination of the community after the tragedy. Cultural asset mapping and cultural district planning activities will enable the town to create a stronger identity for the town and neighborhoods.
