The NEA & Freddie Mac Present The Internet Archive Bookmobile At The National Book FestivalSeptember 22, 2005
Children can experience the book-making process for themselves when they visit the Internet Archive Bookmobile at the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, September 24. This mobile digital library allows visitors to download almost 20,000 public domain books from the Internet via satellite and then print and bind these books, anytime and anywhere. The NEA has partnered with Freddie Mac to bring the Bookmobile, and the Poetry Pavilion, to the National Book Festival. The Festival is organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by Laura Bush. By allowing people to instantly print their own books at low cost, the Bookmobile helps to further the Archive's vision of universal access to all knowledge. In addition to the one in Washington this weekend, visiting all the way from San Francisco, there are Internet Bookmobiles in India and Egypt as well. "The Internet Archive Bookmobile affords people the experience of having a free book from the public domain, and the experience of this new technology that makes so much immediately available," said Beatrice Murch, Bookmobile Project Coordinator at the Internet Archive. "It brings the public domain to life by transforming bits into books." About the Poetry Pavilion The Poetry Pavilion will feature 13 poets reading from their collections and discussing their work at the National Book Festival. The poets come from across the country and represent diverse styles ranging from formal to free verse, from recognized masters to emerging artists. Presentations begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue through 5:00 p.m. The poets also will be available to sign books.
