NEA Chairman Dana Gioia Speaks at LBJ Library and Museum Symposium Marking 40th Anniversary of the National Endowment for the Arts
October 28, 2005 Washington, D.C. - Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will be the keynote speaker at a symposium organized by the Lyndon B. Johnson Library and Museum, at the University of Texas at Austin. Chairman Gioia will present a speech as part of the symposium titled "The NEA at 40: Cultural Policy and American Democracy." The LBJ Library and Museum organized the symposium in honor of the Endowment’s 40th Anniversary. It was 40 years ago, on September 29, 1965, that President Johnson signed the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act, legislation enabling the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts. The symposium, which takes place October 28 and 29, will feature panel discussions with a range of leaders in the public and private fields, including scholars, arts administrators, and artists. Panels include a look at the role of the arts in American history; evolution of presidential support for the arts in the 1960s; and a discussion featuring Wayne Brown, NEA Director of Music and Opera and the NEA Jazz Masters Initiative; and Douglas Sonntag, NEA Director of Dance and National Initiatives.
