Chairman Rocco Landesman Releases the Schedule for His Visit to Chelsea and Detroit, Michigan, March 22-23, 2010

Washington, DC -- In his latest stops on the Art Works tour across America, scheduled for March 22nd and 23rd, NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman will visit Chelsea and Detroit, Michigan. Chairman Landesman is coming to Michigan at the invitation of the Kresge Foundation and its president and CEO Rip Rapson. Jeff Daniels, renowned actor (now appearing on Broadway in God of Carnage) and founder of the Purple Rose Theatre in Chelsea, will welcome Chairman Landesman to his hometown of Chelsea.

The chairman is traveling to these two places to learn how the arts work in Michigan with a particular focus on the role of the arts in creating and sustaining vibrant urban and rural centers. In addition to listening and learning about the local arts environment, the chairman will release data analysis about arts participation at the roundtable discussion on March 22. That analysis focuses on arts participation in metro versus non-metro (rural) areas using 11 sites as data sources including Detroit.

Monday, March 22: Chelsea, Michigan

Chelsea overview

Topics include SculptureWalk Chelsea, Sounds & Sights, and Culturality

2:15-3:00 p.m. 

 

Roundtable discussion
Location: Common Grill, 112 South Main Street
Chairman will release local area data on arts participation. The roundtable will focus then on Chelsea as a model for small towns to use the arts as a fulcrum for redevelopment.
 

Tuesday, March 23: Detroit, Michigan

Tour of Compas and panel discussion on Community-based arts and cultural activities used strengthen neighborhoods and encourage civic dialogue

Lunch and roundtable discussion on the creative industries as part of the region's revitalization strategy and educating the next generation of the creative class in Detroit's classrooms.

Tour of Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and an Art Works conversation on the midtown cultural corridor and revitalization efforts underway.

Reception and performance by musicians from the Sphinx Organization
