Curtis Fuller on Coltrane's "Moment's Notice"

Now, a Jazz Moment...

MUSIC: "Moment's Notice" CD: Blue Train, BlueNote 95325 (cut 2)

John Coltrane's historic 1957 recording "Blue Train" remains one of the best-selling albums in jazz today.   It features a young trombonist, who eventually became one of Coltrane's closest friends, NEA Jazz Master Curtis Fuller.

Curtis Fuller: John was taking music another direction.   You know, it wasn't just rhythm changes anymore - "Just You, Just Me" changes.   It was completely different.   So much so that I made a comment on a record date.   Uh.. "John, you <laughs> put this music on us on a moment's notice.   We got three hours to rehearse this music and we're gonna record?"   "In a moment's notice?" and that became the title of the song.   <laughs>

MUSIC: same - up and under

Curtis Fuller: That was intimidating.   It wasn't trombone-friendly at the time.   <laughs>   (:28)
