NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT… MUSIC: Picture 3 (Jack DeJohnette)                         CD: Pictures                          ECM Records 1977 NEA JAZZ MASTER JACK DEJOHNETTE GREW UP IN A FAMILY FULL OF MUSIC APPRECIATION.  HE LISTENED TO EVERYTHING FROM OPERA, COUNTRY-WESTERN, RHYTHM & BLUES… TO JAZZ AND SWING MUSIC.  IT WAS THESE EARLY LISTENING SKILLS AND BROAD TASTES THAT SHAPED HIM INTO THE SENSITIVE PLAYER HE IS TODAY… Jack DeJohnette:  The best gift that I have is the ability to listen.  Not only listen audibly, but also listen, feeling with my heart.  Feeling what’s going on, what they’re trying to communicate.  And in that split second of communication, be able to support that idea in that moment.  The musicians know I got their back, no matter where they go.  And so when you know you’re bein listened to, it frees you up, so you’re free to go wherever you wanna go.
