Keith Jarrett on understanding your bandmates

RUFFIN: NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT WITH NEA JAZZ MASTER AND PIANIST KEITH JARRETT.

Forget Your Memories

Keith Jarrett: If you are a good leader, then you are also a psychologist of some kind, if you know the potential of the players, if you're lucky or smart …   JARRETT KNOWS WHAT HE’S TALKING ABOUT. FOR YEARS, HE LED A VERY IMPRESSIVE QUARTET COMPRISED OF TENOR SAXOPHONIST DEWEY REDMAN, DRUMMER PAUL MOTIAN, AND BASSIST CHARLIE HADEN.

Keith Jarrett: With the Quartet I was writing all the music for Dewey and Paul and Charlie. And it was written for them. It's a kind of getting to know the players so well that the music you write, you're hearing them in your head.

Forget Your Memories up. Hot
