I have been a spoken word artist since receiving an award in the Sonia Sanchez/Audre Lorde Poetry Writing Contest in 1998 through my participation in the PASCEP Program (Pan African Studies Community Education Program) at Temple University. After having performed poetry and co-facilitated writing workshops as a member of the ensemble IN THE COMPANY OF POETS, I founded my own ensemble, FOR WOMEN COLLECTIVE, in tribute to voice of the civil rights movement, Nina Simone. I wrote a poem, "Debra" in acrostic verse, which tells my story:

Determined to make a difference I
Evidence my mother’s wisdom with
Bodacious words and
Righteous rhythms wrapped ‘round
African curves
