I was very active in the arts in Fairbanks, Alaska, 50+ years ago, and I remember so well when the NEA was founded.

Each state was directed to establish a state arts council. We were told that Alaska was one of the first states to do this! We had already formed a local arts organization. (I was on the board to get it established.) We were ahead of other communities in the state because Fairbanks had a very beautiful, sharp, politically aware young woman—Geneva Emmal, who had been closely following the establishment of NEA. (Sad to say she passed away about 30 years ago.) I'm happy now to publicly acknowledge all Geneva did to move Alaska forward into the arts world!
