Art Works Podcast: Aaron Diehl

With this week's podcast, you have the opportunity to meet 26-year-old Aaron Diehl, winner of the 2011 Cole Porter Fellowship in Jazz, the prestigious competition of the American Pianists Association.  Diehl is an elegant jazz pianist who also knows how to let loose; his playing has been called “the perfect marriage of composition and improvisation.” A graduate of Juilliard’s jazz program, Diehl was first introduced to playing ensemble jazz by Todd Stoll, the renowned director of the Columbus Youth Jazz Orchestra. Stoll also introduced Diehl to Wynton Marsalis, who was so impressed with the teenager that he invited him along on a month-long tour with his septet before Diehl began his program at Juilliard. There was just one problem: the 17-year-old had another summer engagement. [1:37]
