All Souls' Day and Sun, Stone, and Shadows

"La Calavera Catrina" by Jose Posada.

To celebrate Mexico?s Day of the Dead (November 1 and 2 are All Saints? and All Souls? Day, respectively), we?re turning to ?Chac-Mool,? a terrifying story by Carlos Fuentes found in the collection Sun, Stone, and Shadows. ?Chac-Mool? chronicles the final, strange days of a dispirited and disillusioned bureaucrat named Filiberto. We?ll hear two excerpts from the story as read by Fuentes---the first in English and the second in Spanish. This comes from later in the story when Filiberto comes face-to-face with the grotesque Chac-Mool creature in his bedroom.
