Happy Birthday, Nadine Gordimer!

Illustration of Naghib Mahfouz by John Sherffius

Literary icon, activist, and Nobel Prize-winner Nadine Gordimer was born on November 20, 1923. Today, in honor of her birthday, we’ll listen to her discuss one of her literary heroes, Egyptian writer Naghib Mahfouz. This audio clip appears near the end of our audio program on Mahfouz's landmark book and Big Read selection, The Thief and the Dogs. I often recommend this book to people, especially people interested in Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and other noir stylists. I also recommend listening to the entire Big Read audio guide. It's a rich show with wonderful music and powerful readings by expert actor Ed Gero. Additionally, below, you'll hear commentary from Irish crime novelist Adrian McKinty, a man who knows a thing or two about the moral code often found in crime writing. [1:33]
