Trains, Fossils, and Spaceships…a Little Boy’s Paradise!

School is out for summer (can you say “Yay!” and “Yikes” both at the same time?!?). With three boys four and younger, summer has a new meaning in my life. No longer are June, July, and August defined by lazy mornings, sandals, sunshine, and an afternoon cocktail; rather, it means two-and-a-half months of not having a routine and most importantly, not having scheduled activities to tire my boys out and ensure me a good night’s sleep!

I began this summer thinking I could just “wing it” on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, last week proved to me that I need a routine. With this realization, I began a hunt for fun, low-cost activities to fill our summertime calendar. This is where the Blue Star Museums program not only came to my rescue---it gave me too many options (but that is a good thing)! With so many incredible museums in our area to choose from, the boys and I will be entertained all summer long---and the best part about it, it’s FREE!!!

To kick off our summertime fun, the boys and I set off to check out Gull Wings Children’s Museum in Oxnard, California. Though small in size, this museum is packed with fun and adventure! Whether digging for fossils, flying a spaceship and walking on the moon, or watching a large train navigate throughout a model town, my boys were in a little boy wonderland! To top off all the great activities, the staff was so welcoming and very excited to be participating in the Blue Star Museums program supporting military families!

Though my boys are too young to truly appreciate this awesome program, I am so impressed and thankful for the thousands of museums that have joined this wonderful program in support of military families. I look forward to all of our adventures this summer---it will definitely make for some fun memories in the months ahead!

We’ll be checking back next month from the Zimmer Children’s Museum in Los Angeles! Until next time…here’s to a fun and festive 4th of July!

Megan Glynn, named 2011 Air Force Spouse of the Year by Military Spouse Magazine, dedicates herself to serving those that serve. Whether teaching and coaching the children of military servicemen/women, teaching childbirth education to expectant couples overseas, or standing bedside with a laboring mom-to-be while her husband is deployed, Megan loves supporting the military family. Over the past ten years, Megan and her family have had the pleasure of being stationed twice in Germany and once in Korea. In 2009, Megan and her mom launched an online website, Zoolu!, geared to providing top name-brand and personalized baby, children, and mommy items to military families worldwide, with a particular focus on those families stationed overseas. Megan currently lives in southern California with her husband and her three sons, ages 4, 2, and newborn.
