Terpischore for Kansas City

Tue, 2016-08-30 14:43 -- Don Ball

The project transforms the parking garage of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts into a public art musical instrument with light and sound.  The artwork extends throughout the entire space of this 1,000-car, four-story garage.  The central feature of Terpsichore (the Greek muse of Dance and Chorus) is the Light Organ, a vertical sculpture of light tubes that produce white and blue light to create compositional patterns in different rhythms and intensities.  Sound from 108 speakers, activated by motion sensors, makes it seem as though the garage itself is making music.
