Our Town

City of Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee

$100,000

2011

With its legacy as a music town, Memphis has a long tradition of creative community. From Beale Street to Graceland, Memphis -- home to 647,000 people -- is a nexus of art and culture within Tennessee.

To further advance local culture, the city is developing artist live/work space in Memphis's South Main Arts District. Project activities include site selection, design development, financial modeling, and planning work. The City of Memphis, Memphis Housing Authority, Artspace Projects, Inc., Hyde Family Foundations, National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis College of Art, and Center City Commission will collaborate to ensure the new space will attract and retain artists, including some of the 7,600 individuals employed by Memphis's creative economy. This first phase of this project was awarded an NEA MICD25 grant. The Our Town award will fund the next phase of the work.
