Our Town

City of Tacoma, Washington

Tacoma, Washington

$200,000

2011

As the cultural hub for the South Puget Sound, Tacoma serves 750,000 residents of Pierce County and more than 225,000 cultural tourists from the region and nation per year.

The city's Our Town grant will support a collaborative design process for the redesign of Tacoma Art Museum Plaza and the surrounding Pacific Avenue streetscape. Pacific Avenue is the downtown area's main artery, and is a nexus of major cultural and community assets. Unfortunately, it is currently an underutilized deadzone with limited pedestrian use and long, unattractive stretches of concrete. The City of Tacoma's Community and Economic Development Department, Public Works Department, and Arts Commission are committed to working with the Tacoma Art Museum to transform the site into an active epicenter and iconic gateway for downtown Tacoma. The design will include innovative storm water infrastructure, public art, outdoor event space, and signage elements that enhance public access to the museum district. Olson Kundig Architects will develop design concepts for the museum's new entrance to be integrated with streetscape design; planning will be led by a team of landscape architects, urban planners, and environmental artist Lorna Jordan. Project activities include collaborative schematic design and design development, community engagement sessions, and the creation of construction drawings.
