Greater Columbus Arts Council

Columbus, Ohio

The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) advances the region's culture by funding artists and arts organizations. GCAC also offers programs, events, and services for Columbus's 6,000 residents and 100,000 downtown workers.

The Arts Endowment will help support a program of public art projects along the riverfront in Columbus. In conjunction with upcoming bicentennial celebrations for the city, public art will transform a seven-block area surrounding the State House and riverfront to create memorable experiences for workers, citizens, and visitors. A permanent work will be commissioned for the riverfront park, and several temporary site-responsive pieces will be placed in non-traditional sites such as city buses and taxis, the carillon of a center-city church, and parking attendant sheds. Overarching themes related to the city's identity as the capital of Ohio and its place in the nation and the world will inform the selection of artists and works. The initiative is expected to inaugurate future temporary public art projects on a seven-year cycle, and to foster broad community support for an ongoing, citywide public art program.
