Art Spaces

Terre Haute, Indiana

$25,000

2012

Through local, state, and federal partnerships, the Wabash River, once a site for major industry, has recently undergone toxic waste cleanup and promises to serve as an important community asset and public gathering space for the 60,000 residents of Terre Haute, Indiana.

With its Our Town grant, the City of Terre Haute and local arts not-for-profit Art Spaces will engage J3 Concepts, a cultural planning consultant, to lead the community engagement process and deliver a public art plan for 11 acres of the Wabash Riverfront. The project, called Turn to the River, will link the city's downtown area to the Wabash River through public art, the connectivity helping both districts to thrive. Project activities will also include public sessions to invite community feedback and participation, consultation with ecological artists to present ideas that address the health and vitality of the river, and educational lectures that explore the intersections between art and the environment of the river.
