City of Kinston

Kinston, North Carolina

$100,000

2012

The city of Kinston, North Carolina, has a rich heritage, as music has played a major role in shaping the local history and culture. The contributions of local musicians are currently being highlighted in the African-American Music Trail (AAMT) through public art, programming, and other amenities and activities.

The City of Kinston, in partnership with the Kinston Community Council for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council, is using their Our Town grant for the final phase of AAMT. A team of planning consultants, landscape architects, and artists will work closely with the community to establish a cultural district plan along with public art installations that celebrate the city's musical heritage. The project will enhance the downtown with artful elements for commemorating Kinston's musical legacy and strategies to support the arts community, serving as a cultural destination for the city's 21,600 residents and tourists.
