Westmoreland Museum of American Art

Greensburg, Pennsylvania

Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is the seat of Westmoreland County, located about 35 miles from Pittsburgh. The past few years have seen a cultural renaissance in Greensburg with the renovation of the historic Palace Theatre and construction of the new Seton Hill University Performing Arts Center.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art and the City of Greensburg are partnering on Bridging the Gap, a public art project to revitalize the Maple Avenue and Main Street bridges in the city. The soon to be expanding Westmoreland Museum of American Art sits at the top of a hill reached by these functional but unsightly bridges, creating a desolate barrier between the Academy Hill Cultural District and downtown Greensburg. During the project period, the Westmoreland Museum and the City of Greensburg will consult with the City of Pittsburgh's Office of Public Art to conduct community planning meetings, develop bridge design goals, carry out a multi-stage artist selection process, and guide the artists through a design review process with jurisdictional agencies and stakeholders. Enhancing the bridges through public art is expected to rejuvenate the area, inspire community pride, and create a public gateway to the city's cultural district.
