The NEA grant will support Shakespeare OFF the Common, a program that includes theater workshops in Boston Public Schools and free performances in neighborhood parks. Workshops and performances will engage students, local artists, and community groups to participate in performances and to expose new audiences to the work of Shakespeare. Partners include Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Boys and Girls Club of Boston, and City of Boston Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events. Workshops and performances will target underserved youth and residents in the Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan neighborhoods. The company reaches an annual summer attendance of 100,000 during their traditional programming, Shakespeare On the Common.
