The Big Write

Sure our Big Read authors inspire us to read, but they can also inspire us to write! Here are five suggestions for writing prompts based on books in the Big Read library. Have your Big Read-inspired writing prompt to add? Let us know in the comments or on our Facebook page. Happy writing!

1. Keeping in mind The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, make a list of the things that you consider the most beautiful things you’ve personally experienced.

2. “…I always hopelessly, passionately, root for the underdog”--Luis Urrea. Write a poem hopelessly, passionately rooting for an underdog you know or have read about recently. Channel Urrea.

3. Imagine a scene where the brothers in Edwidge Danticat's Brother, I’m Dying reunite in Florida or New York. Write a poem about the scene or write it as a scene in a play.

4. Choose a poem by Emily Dickinson. Write down the end word of each line in order. Write your own poem using those words as the beginning words of your poem.

5. PIck your favorite Big Read novel. Write the scene that comes after the end of the book, either as a short story or a short play.
