Poetry Ourselves

Poetry Out Loud is offering an additional competition for original student work for the 2018 National Finals. Each 2018 state champion will have the opportunity to submit one original work of either written or spoken poetry. A winner and runners-up will be selected for each category. Winners and runners-up will be announced at the 2018 Poetry Out Loud National Finals and winning work may be featured on the NEA website and the Poetry Out Loud website.

Poet Jamaal May will judge the submissions for Poetry Ourselves. May’s book Hum has won the Beatrice Hawley Award, the ALA Notable Book Award, and was a finalist for the NAACP Image award. His second collection is The Big Book of Exit Strategies and he has also published two chapbooks, The God Engine and The Whetting of Teeth. His poetry has appeared in Poetry magazine, The Believer, Ploughshares, New England Review, and Kenyon Review. He has also been a recipient of the Kenyon Review Fellowship at Kenyon College, Bread Loaf, Callaloo, and the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship. He is the series editor, graphic designer, and filmmaker for the Organic Weapon Arts chapbook and video series.

This competition is only open to 2018 Poetry Out Loud State Champions.
