In September 2023—for its first in-person events since 2019—the National Endowment for the Arts convened the 2020-2023 National Heritage Fellows to explore the legacy and impact of this lifetime honor. During a historic one-day convening at the National Museum of the America Indian, fellows engaged in sharing circles and facilitated small group discussions. A special afternoon panel, Native Art Making in Place, featured a film screening and conversation about Native art making and the land. NEA National Heritage Fellows shared firsthand stories of place and belonging as understood through their life’s work as traditional and community-based artists. Photos by Remsberg Inc
An awards ceremony, hosted by the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, celebrated the 2023 fellows on stage where they received their medals and recognized the 2020-2022 recipients. The ceremony opened with a performance by Irish flute player and 2021 NEA National Heritage Fellow Joanie Madden with guitarist Zan McLeod. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Great Hall for the fellows and their families with performances by Wu Man (2023) and the Legendary Ingramettes (2022). Photos by Tom Pich
