Project Description

To support the translation from the Slovenian of Selected Poems by Aleš Šteger. The author of six books of poetry, three novels, and two books of nonfiction, Šteger (b. 1973) has received numerous national and international awards. This project will comprise poems from all six of his poetry collections as well as new poems that will offer American audiences an up-to-date selection that covers Šteger's entire oeuvre.

Receiving a translation grant from the National Endowment for the Arts will be of great assistance to me as I translate and edit Aleš Šteger’s Selected Poems. The English book will include work from his six published books of poetry as well as newer poems to ensure that the book is up-to-date and covers Šteger’s entire oeuvre. Having translated several of Šteger’s individual books into English, an English-language Selected Poems seems like the logical next step. I am grateful that the NEA considers the book to be significant enough to warrant this grant.
