Bio
Will Vanderhyden is a translator of Spanish-language literature with a BA in history from Lawrence University and an MA in literary translation from the University of Rochester. He has translated nine books of fiction for publication and his translations and writing have appeared in online and print publications like Granta, Two Lines, the Literary Review, the Scofield, the Arkansas International, Literary Hub, Bomb Magazine, Purple,Future Tense, and Southwest Review.His translations include work by Carlos Labbé, Rodrigo Fresán, Fernanda García Lao, Juan Villoro, Laura Fernández, Dainerys Machado Vento, Camila Fabbri, Juan Ignacio Boido, Andrés Felipe Solano, and Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill among others. This is his second fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. He received a residency fellowship from the Lannan Foundation in 2015. And in 2018 his translation of The Invented Part by Rodrigo Fresán won the Best Translated Book Award for fiction.
Project Description
To support the translation from the Spanish of The Complete Stories by Argentine author Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill. Fogwill (1941-2010) is one of Argentina’s most consequential and prolific writers of the past 50 years with a 30-book oeuvre of novels, short story collections, poetry, and nonfiction. He was also a public intellectual who pursued controversy and cultivated an irreverent, polemical persona. Published in 2010, The Complete Stories is a collection of 21 stories that spans Fogwill’s 30-year career and explores themes of love, sex, violence, politics, philosophy, and art.
National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowships enable translators to take on projects of scope and ambition otherwise out of reach given the practical constraints and economic incentives of literary publishing. I feel so lucky to receive this award and so grateful to the NEA for providing this kind of support to translators. I have been translating Fogwill’s stories and promoting this collection for several years now, and beyond the time this award will give me to continue that work, it comes as a much-needed dose of external validation, reaffirming my devotion to the project. But most importantly, this award will help elevate Fogwill’s international profile and expose English-language readers to the remarkable stories and inimitable style of one of Argentina’s great writers.
About Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill
Rodolfo Enrique Fogwill (1941-2010) is considered one of the most influential Argentine writers of recent decades. He published 11 novels, nine story collections, eight books of poetry, and one collection of nonfiction. He was an outspoken critic who pursued controversy and cultivated an irreverent, polemical persona. He founded an independent publishing house that helped launch the careers of well-known writers like Cesar Aira. Over his career, he won multiple awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and Argentina’s Premio Nacional de Literatura.
