Facts and Figures

In the past five years, the National Endowment for the Arts distributed $52,450,158 in federal funding, either directly or through state and regional partners, in Maryland.

In the most recent information (2023) from the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA), which is produced jointly by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Office of Research & Analysis and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Commerce Department, Maryland...

  • Added 2.7 percent or $13.7 billion to the state economy from arts and cultural production
  • Employed 86,234 workers in the arts and cultural industries, with workers earning wages and benefits totaling more than $7.6 billion

Approximately 43 percent of Maryland’s adults attended live music, theater, or dance performances, while more than 20 percent attended art exhibits, according to the 2022 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau.

In addition to offering direct grants, the NEA supports national initiatives benefiting people across the country. Over the past five years:

The Blue Star Museums program provided free admission to thousands of active military personnel and their families at 102 participating museums in Maryland. 

More than 620 students from 72 high schools in Maryland participated in Poetry Out Loud.

The NEA Big Read program generated community events focused on reading outstanding American literature and involving more than 7,572 adults and students in Maryland.

The Shakespeare in American Communities program in Maryland enabled schools to offer 4,657 children the opportunity to see live professional performances of Shakespeare, or to engage in educational programs.

Unlocking Baltimore
Established in 2014 by architect Chelsea Thomas in collaboration with the Baltimore Architecture Foundation, Doors Open Baltimore is an annual citywide festival offering free access to some of Baltimore's most iconic and lesser-known buildings. Its mission is to deepen appreciation for the city's architectural heritage across its diverse neighborhoods.

Wild at Heart
In the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland, the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art sits on the campus of Salisbury University. A small museum, opened in 1975, the Ward Museum nonetheless has connected significantly with its surrounding community.
