Facts and Figures

In the past five years, the National Endowment for the Arts distributed $20,440,195 in federal funding, either directly or through state and regional partners, in Michigan.

In the most recent information (2023) from the Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA), which is produced jointly by the National Endowment for the Arts’ Office of Research & Analysis and the Bureau of Economic Analysis, U.S. Commerce Department, Michigan...

  • Added 3 percent or $20.5 billion to the state economy from arts and cultural production
  • Employed 144,279 workers in the arts and cultural industries, with workers earning wages and benefits totaling $11.1 billion

Nearly 45 percent of Michigan’s adults attended live music, theater, or dance performances, while more than 20 percent attended art exhibits, according to the 2022 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Census Bureau.

In addition to offering direct grants, the NEA supports national initiatives benefiting people across the country. Over the past five years:

The Blue Star Museums program provided free admission to thousands of active military personnel and their families at 146 participating museums in Michigan.

More than 6,305 students from 113 high schools in Michigan participated in Poetry Out Loud.

The NEA Big Read program generated community events focused on reading outstanding American literature and involving more than 59,385 adults and students in Michigan.

The Shakespeare in American Communities program in Michigan enabled schools to offer 2,043 children the opportunity to see live professional
performances of Shakespeare, or to engage in educational programs.

NEA Jazz Masters: Tribute to Regina Carter

2023 NEA Jazz Master Regina Carter is renowned for her mastery of the violin and exploring the instrument’s possibilities in jazz, as well as taking journeys in other genres of music. A recipient of a MacArthur "genius" grant and a Doris Duke Artist Award (as well as an individual NEA jazz grant in 1990), Carter also shares her knowledge and talent through teaching and workshops.

Transforming Lives through Music Education
Accent Pontiac, a music education organization, serves more than 270 students in Michigan's Pontiac School District, providing a free comprehensive music education experience that includes in-school and afterschool classes and a social-emotional curriculum that encompasses self-awareness, relationship-building, effective decision-making, and self-management.
